If you have a forum based on Simple Machine Forum software, you definitely know how horrible smf
forums look on mobile. But don't worry you can make your forum compact and mobile friendly using the following options.
1. SMF4Mobile: This is a mobile theme created by smf-media. It costs $20dollars to purchase. Installation is simple.
2. CurveMobile: CurveMobile is a stripped down mobile theme created from the default curve theme. Go over to smf theme and mod site and search for curve mobile. You will need to install both the curvemobile theme and mod. Take note that there are glitches in some features on this theme.
3. Wedge Software: This forum software is no longer on smf. It was initially created from smf but has now been developed into a standalone forum script. Visit GitHub and search for wedge, download and install. Elkarte and Express are forum script alternatives like Wedge.
4. Reseller Theme: This is not a mobile theme but a responsive one that fits any browser screen. This theme is clean and based on smf. It was created by smftricks. Installation is simple and straightforward
5. Factory Theme: This responsive theme is the equivalent of smf4mobile but costs $19 if you want to retain their copyright. It is a very simple and clean alternative, I must say.
6. Tapatalk: This is a forum application available for android, ios and windows based phones. It reders your forum in a mobile friendly way. Register with tapatalk, download and install tapatalk using your package manager and you are good to go. You'll be required to provide your forum details and logo when setting up your forum with tapatalk.
7. Index.css: Customizing your index.css file insde the css folder of your theme can provide a responsive capacity for your forum. The major areas of the code to edit are @media query, width, etc.
7. SMF 2.0: Curve2 is a responsive theme that is rumoured to come with smf 2.0 release. Developers at smf are currently working on releasing a new upgrade with will feature this responsive mobile theme as default.
For now, I have decided to stick with the default theme at my forum until the smf developers release their official responsive theme. If you have any other suggestion on themes, mods, code edits that can provide a better mobile experience for smf forum users, kindly share.
