Wayne Rooney feels Manchester United did a
professional job to see off Sunderland’s challenge
today, running out 3-0 winners, while also
admitting Manchester City's defeat to Tottenham
Hotspur earlier in the day was on their mind.
Manchester United dominated possession and
controlled the ball throughout the game, but
struggled to break down Sunderland’s much
maligned defence in the first half.
However, on the stroke of half-time Daley Blind
played a defence splitting pass to find Juan Mata,
who squared the ball to the perfectly positioned
Memphis Depay, who slotted in the ball to give the
lead to the home side at Old Trafford.
Rooney added a second early in the first half to break
his goalscoring drought in the Premier League to
ease the tension inside the stadium.
Juan Mata added a third in the 90th minute to make a
comfortable 3-0 win over the Black Cats, who are
winless in the league after seven games.
Rooney liked the way Manchester United went about
their job professionally to get a comfortable win over
the visitors today, while he also admitted the Red
Devils, who now top the league, wanted to take
advantage of Manchester City losing.
“Yes, of course we knew the result [of Manchester
City] and I think sometimes you have to be careful
because it's about what we do today”, Rooney told
the BBC.
“You can get that false hope of the game of them
losing.
“You can lose a bit of concentration and we reminded
each other about that before the game, and went out
and did a good job.”
On his first goal in the league, Rooney said: “I saw
Anthony [Martial] making a good run and once he got
round of the defender and got into the box.I had to
get on the end of it and obviously I did.
"I'm thankful to score today.”
The win helped Manchester United to go top of the
league, leapfrogging Manchester City who suffered a
4-1 thrashing at Tottenham earlier today.
Next they will welcome Wolfsburg to Old Trafford on
Wednesday night for a Champions League group
game and then take an away trip to Arsenal next
weekend.
