The Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG) is funding Elizabeth E. Bascom  international fellowship in Conservation Biology. The students of Mexico, Central America, South America, Madagascar, Vietnam, and Tanzania and resident in those countries can apply for this fellowship. This fellowship is for pursuing research programme. The fellowship covers round-trip airfare stipend for food, transportation, health insurance, and other incidental expenses. Students must be undergraduate, graduate and professionals from universities, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations. English proficiency is required. The deadline for applications is 31 July 2013.

Study Subject(s): The fellowship is provided to study conservation biology.

Course Level: This fellowship is for pursuing research programme at the Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG).

Eligibility: -The Fellowships are open to applicants from Mexico, Central America, South America, Madagascar, Vietnam, and Tanzania and resident in those countries.

-Application is open to 1) individuals who have recently completed an undergraduate degree, 2) graduate students, or 3) professionals from universities, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations.

-To qualify, applicants must have an undergraduate degree in conservation biology, ecology, botany/plant sciences, or a related field and prior research experience.

-Applicants must be willing to occasionally work long hours in hot, dry, and wet weather conditions and must have the ability to hike up to 3 miles carrying a 30-pound pack. During their stay, Fellows must have health insurance, which will be provided by MBG.

-Fluency in English preferred.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: The students of Mexico, Central America( Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama), South America ( Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela,) Madagascar, Vietnam, and Tanzania and resident in those countries can apply for this International Fellowship.

Scholarship Description: The purpose of the Fellowship is to broaden the Fellows’ expertise and experience in conservation biology. Utilizing varied techniques and resources, Fellows will participate in scientific research projects and activities related to the population dynamics of rare plants, restoration of endangered plant species, ex situ conservation of native plant species, germination ecology of rare plants, and effects of climate change on the spatial distribution of plants.

Duration of award(s): Fellowship is applicable for three months.

What does it cover? The Fellowship will cover the costs of round-trip air travel to St. Louis and lodging in MBG’s visitor apartments, and will provide a stipend for food, local transportation, and other incidental expenses in St. Louis for a period of up to three months. During their stay, Fellows must have health insurance, which will be provided by MBG.

Notification: Students will be notified by 30 September 2013.

How to Apply: The mode of applying is electronically or by post. Applications will consist of a maximum of seven pages that will include the following documents:

1) A statement of relevant academic preparation and previous research in conservation, ecology, or botany, following the instructions described on the reverse;

2) An up-to-date curriculum vitae following the format and examples indicated on the reverse side of this page (maximum of two pages, 10-point font);

3) A copy of the most advanced university degree earned;

4) A letter of recommendation;

5) A letter from the institution with which the applicant is affiliated that supports his/her participation in this program

Applications may be submitted in English or Spanish and should preferably be sent by e-mail. Incomplete applications or those that exceed the seven-page limit will not be considered. Applications sent by regular mail or fax will also be accepted.
