Doctoral Research Position at JSMC in Germany, 2013

The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC), Germany is inviting applications for doctoral research position. The various research projects are available in different areas. The Position is offered for three years. To be eligible for the position, applicant must have Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a discipline related to that research project for which applicant want to apply. The application deadline is May 1st, 2013. Selected applicants will be invited to the JSMC/ILRS Recruitment Meeting in Jena, Germany, on June 24-26, 2013. Awarding decisions will be made shortly thereafter, allowing the projects to start immediately.

Study Subject(s): The following research projects are available: Soil amoeba interactions with filamentous fungi as driving forces for pathogenicity, Epigenetic control of secondary metabolism in filamentous fungi, Exploration of a tripartite partnership between green algae and bacteria: From epiphytic bacterial communities to bio-film formation with Ulva sp, Small molecule signals in entomopathogenic nematode-bacteria interactions, Pathogen/host communication: dual RNA expression dynamics to investigate differential patterns of virulence, Cell type-specific role of PI3Kgamma in sepsis-associated liver failure, Extraction of unstructured information related to gene regulatory interactions in human pathogenic fungi from biological research papers, The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal infection on the fitness of Nicotiana attenuata in the field and Interaction of freshwater acI Actinobacteria with its partners in enrichment cultures. Course Level: This scholarship is available for pursuing doctoral research programme at the Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC). Scholarship Provider: German Excellence Initiative Scholarship can be taken at: Germany

Eligibility: -Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Geosciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, etc.). Candidates about to obtain their degree are welcome to apply. -a Master’s degree (or equivalent) at the intersection of Computer Science, Biology, Bioinformatics or Computational Linguistics. Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply. (for research project on Extraction of unstructured information related to gene regulatory interactions in human pathogenic fungi from biological research papers) - a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Molecular Medicine or related areas. Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply. (for research project on Cell type-specific role of PI3Kgamma in sepsis-associated liver failure) - high motivation and interest in joining one of the interdisciplinary research areas of the JSMC - creativity and interest in shaping your own thesis project. - an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in the livey JSMC Community - very good communication skills in English (the language of instruction at the JSMC).

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: The German students can apply for this position.

Scholarship Description: The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) is funded by the German Excellence Initiative. JSMC is an ambitious Graduate School with over 150 doctoral researchers who are educated in a structured, interdisciplinary training program based on top-level fundamental research. It conceptionally combines different research areas to a comprehensive picture of microbial communication. Institutes at five faculties of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, six non-university research institutes as well as 12 partner companies are participating in this cutting-edge research and training program.

Duration of award(s): Position is offered for three years.

What does it cover? The university offer: -a highly communicative atmosphere within a scientific network providing top-level research facilities -a doctoral researcher position (TV-L E13, 65%) funded for three years based on the regulations of the German Research Foundation as well as generous research funding -a comprehensive mentoring program with supervision by a team of advisors -a top-level PhD training program with courses in state-of-the-art research technologies and soft skills -Jena – the German City of Science 2008: a young and lively town with dynamic business activities, successful scientific centers of innovation and a vibrant cultural scene around the famous Friedrich Schiller University.
