Eligibility: University is looking for a motivated candidate with a background in electrical/computer engineering. In-depth knowledge about and experience with programming Xilinx FPGA’s is mandatory as well as a good understanding of high-speed analog signal acquisition and processing. The candidate should have an affection with biological research and advanced microscopy.

Scholarship Description: Confocal microscopy is a technology to make 3D images of fluorescently labelled biological objects. Since the first development of the confocal microscope in the early 80s the detection efficiency has been improved substantially by using more sensitive detectors, better optical design and improvements of the acquisition electronics. It is the aim of this project to further improve the sensitivity of the microscope. Sensitivity will be improved by advanced illumination strategies, new detection methods and image reconstruction integration. By a combination of different technologies, we expect to boost sensitivity by a factor of 50 to 100. In this STW-funded research project we have positions available for a clever and enthusiastic young scientists who would like to get a PhD degree after 4 years of research.The successful candidate will design, build and test new electronics for the image acquisition using advanced illumination strategies. An important part of the work concerns the characterization of the newly built microscope with respect to noise, resolution and photon statistics. He/she will focus on electronic implementation and computer simulations. The candidate will work in a team of two other PhD students: a physicist working on new detection techniques and a biologist who will focus on the applications in neurobiology.

Duration of awards: The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The PhD student is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates.

What does it cover? Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2.062 in the first year to €2.664 in the last year. The Collective Employment Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities is applicable.
