That 70% of students who wrote WAEC woefully failed the exam, is no longer news. And this failure will continue skyrocketing until students learn to burn the midnight candle. Most students are always on social sites like 2go, whatssap, skype, facebook at the detriment of their studies. They give all attention to these sites, movies and music more than their notes and text books. That is why when you ask a Nigerian student to mention ten actors and ten musicians, he/she will do that without blinking. But ask that student to tell you ten reasons a particular subject is studied, he/she starts gibbering.
Well, that fault is not just on the student alone. Both the teachers, parents and government should be blamed for the lamentable 'red card' of students called result. Talking about parents, how many parents these days have time to check their wards notebook whether they attended classes or not? How many parents make sure their wards have a personal timetable for studying? How many parents ask their children if they have studied for the day.
Go to some homes, some parents would be seen watching movies with their children till 12 or 2:am. When parents fail in their duty to groom their children, the teacher cannot perform magic.
As for the teachers, most of 'em are there because that is the only available job. So they can never deliver. Besides the fact that they are paid pea nuts, how will they work satisfactorily when the motivating factor (money) is absent? Gone are the days when they said teachers reward is in heaven.
Some teachers are also incompetent. They don't know how to impart knowledge let alone making impact in the lives of the students.
Our government from time immemorial have failed the citizens. Go to government schools, teachers go to school. Sign the attendance note and rush off for other businesses. Go to science labs of government schools what you will see are empty spaces. Its pathetic!
