Basic Attack Method To Arrive At The Right Answer Under Comprehension. Immediately a candidate comes face to face with a comprehension passage, what is the step by step approach to getting the right answer? Student do face with the difficulty of answering comprehension passage.


The basic attack method
Here, a list of step by step ways is presented on how to arrive at the right answer under comprehension passage. Over the years-even from the primary school days, candidate had been told to read the passage, first and, for effective understanding, read twice’’. This approach can help only primary school pupils.

Imagine that someone ask you to go into a large hall, without further instructions. You are most likely, therefore, to go into the hall and stand there, looking blank and joblessly tired. But imagine that you were ask to go into the hall and fetch a chair, a duster and exercise book. Sure! Immediately you get into the hall, your preoccupation will would be, to look for those items, without wasting time.

Understand a comprehension passage.
A comprehension passage can be compared to a large hall and the questions you are asked under it can be compared to the items, (chair, duster and exercise book) that you have been asked to fetch. If you are not ask to fetch anything in particular, it will be useless reading the passage. This goes to show that, before we read a passage, we should know what we are looking for (i.e questions). It is therefore in appropriate to read a passage. Follow the basic method outlined here.

Read all the question in the passage.
(Without reading the options) carefully and thoughtfully, concentration on the questions. You should try to understand what you are required to do or what the question means. To understand the question, you may translate them or break each down as if you were doing an analysis, e.g. question. ‘’why does Olumba usually look up whenever he addresses anybody?’’. You will break it down in your mind this way.

There is someone called Olumba, he usually looks up. (not just at any time but when he talks to people) what reason has been given in the passage for this habit? Why does he do it; why dose he not look downward or sidewards – why upwards?

Doing this ensures you that you have understood the question perfectly.

Simply try not to forget any of the five or so questions you have read. Under this passage. This means that, after reading all the five questions, before you go into the passage, you must be able to recounts the questions – without looking back in the book. Recount them off-hand.

Also, determine the questioning method used in framing each question: authorial, contextual, periphrastic and so on.

Read the passage for the first time:
while you read the passage, use theories of passage analysis.

Ask yourself

What is the subject matter?

What is the team – or,

Are they any difficult words?

What are their meanings?

Are they any extra-grammatical items,

e.g idioms, metaphors etc.?

What are their meanings?
By the time you have resolved all these, it will have been certain that you perfectly understood the passage. Meanwhile, you have not forgotten any of the five questions that you read before. You will notice that, as you read the passage for the first time, you will come across answers to the questions which you have memorized because the moment your mine crosses anything relating to any questions your mind has stored, the answers will be supplied immediately. You are likely to say: ‘’this part seems to give answers to questions three which says Why Olumba usually looks up whenever he talks to people?’’

Even in such a case that some answers surrender themselves to you, you should not be so hasty as to quickly shade them in.

Read the questions again.
Cross-check whether the answer you proffered is reasonable. if however, the passage is not completely clear to you, read the second time for better understanding.

Assembly all your answers.
They are as I have warned, not the correct answer until you have prove them right with evidence.
