HINT: 10 Herbs You Can Grow Indoors In Water All Year Long
« on: January 01, 2017, 01:57:30 am »

The nature has provided us with numerous different herbs and they all have medicinal, relaxation and culinary properties, which is why we should have them home at any time of the year. In order to achieve that, people need to know how to grow their own herbs in their own kitchen. In this article, we will reveal a way to grow certain herbs in your kitchen and the best part about this is that you won’t have to water them or change their soil on a regular basis.

This is how to grow herbs in water:

In order to grow herbs in water, you need to put some herb cuttings in a glass bottles with plain water, preferably spring water since it is high in minerals. Avoid chlorinated water since the bleaching chemical can harm the plant tissue. You should also leave some tap water to air overnight or store some rainwater.

Make sure to place the herbs in a glass bottle or a mason jar. Since the roots should not be exposed to light, make sure to choose colored bottles or wrap a piece of paper around it.

Using dark glass with help you avoid algal growth on the bottle and on the root. Moreover, the narrow-mouthed containers support the cuttings and keep them upright.

On the other hand, you need to avoid narrow or tight-fitting containers since the mouth should actually support a free transition of air for the roots to be able to breathe.

Make sure to take soft cuttings roots, cut some 6-inch sections from the growing herbs, place them in containers and remember to remove the lower leaves since they rot and can spoil the whole plant.

When it comes to herbs like rosemary cuttings, make sure to change the water once weekly. After 2-6 weeks when the roots start growing, there is no need to change the water.

In order to stimulate the rooting, you should place some willow branches in warm water and leave them to stand throughout the night. You can use some rooting hormone powder as well.

Here are 10 herbs you can grow in water:

Rosemary – when it comes to the semi-woody cuttings of rosemary, they need more time to grow. On the other hand, the new shoots in the spring grow faster, so make sure to keep the plant in a sunny spot.

Oregano – Place the fresh cuttings of oregano in water and pinch the growing tips as the herb grows.

Lemon balm – during spring or fall, pick several cuttings of this plant and place them in water in a bright spot. The cuttings will develop roots after just 3 to 4 weeks. Make sure to change the water on a regular basis. Another solution is to keep the plant outside if the weather is warm. Use its leaves to prepare a delicious tea.

Stevia – take Stevia cuttings from actively growing branches and add them in a container full of water. Remember to place the cuttings in a sunny and warm spot.

Sage – take some sage cuttings in spring and place them in water, but make sure the herb is on a bright spot and in a well-aerated place since it is prone to mildew.

Peppermint – due to its volatile substance menthol, this herb provides a cooling sensation on the skin or tongue and does not change the temperature. Since this is the easiest herb you can grow in water, just place several fresh cuttings in water and let it grow.

Tarragon – use some spring cuttings and place them on a warm and bright place. There are several different types of tarragon, and the French one is the best for culinary purposes. On the other hand, the Russian is better to be used in salads.

Basil – before the cuttings start flowering, you should put them in water and place them in a sunny spot.

Spearmint –Peppermint is a natural hybrid of spearmint and it is easily grown in this way.

Thyme – make sure to take some green cuttings at the beginning of summer, before the thyme starts flowering, place them in water and in order to prevent its drying, make sure to spray the parts which are under water. As soon as it is grown, cut the stems to boost branching.
