11 killed, 112 injured in mishaps in 25 days in Plateau
« on: January 15, 2014, 09:17:27 pm »
Plateau State Sector Commander of the
Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Sunday Maku,
has said 11 people died while 112 others
sustained various degrees of injuries in 42
road accidents in 25 days in the state.
Maku, who gave the statistics in Jos on
Wednesday, said in the same period, 90
persons were rescued from road accidents
without injuries.
He said the figures were obtained during
the command’s 2013 special patrol tagged
‘Operation Zero Tolerance’, between
December 19, 2013 and January 13, 2014.
Maku added that the figures were slightly
lower than the corresponding period last
year.
The commander said, “During the last
special patrol, which lasted for 25 days, we
recorded a total of 42 road carnages, with
213 casualties.
“Among the casualties, 11 lost their lives,
112 were severely injured while 90 persons
were rescued unhurt.
Also in the cause of the special patrol, we
arrested 511 traffic offenders in Plateau.
”The number of road accidents recorded
during the 2013 festive season was fairly
below what we had in 2012.”
He said the reduction in road accidents and
the number of victims were indications that
the command made some progress in its
bid to reduce accidents on the roads in the
state.
The commander added that some of the
traffic offences committed included
overloading, over-speeding, driving vehicles
with bad tyres, dangerous overtaking as
well as underage drivers.
Maku called on motorists to cooperate with
the FRSC to ensure that Nigerian roads were
free of accidents.
