The President of the Academic
Staff Union of Polytechnics
(ASUP), Comrade C.B.
Asomugha, described the
response of the Federal
Government to the ongoing
strike as haphazard and
unconvincing.
He also said during a press conference at
Rich Crest Hotel, Enugu, on January 15, 2014,
Wednesday that the strike became
necessary following the snail speed pace of
the review of the Federal Polytechnics Act at
the National Assembly.
"Since the commencement of the
indefinite strike by the Union,
government's response has been
haphazard and unconvincing.Till date,
the white paper on the visitation panels
to the Federal Polytechnics set up by the
Federal Government nearly two years
ago is yet to be released.
"This is a clear indication of neglect as
the Governing councils set up are
expected to be implementing the
recommendations from the white
paper. It is worrisome that after
spending millions of tax payers' funds
on the exercise which lasted for a
month, no report has been released
leaving the inaugurated Councils
rudderless," Comrade Asomugha noted.
He further condemned the nonchalant
attitude of Federal Government towards
polytechnic education.
"The need for the constitution of
Governing Councils of Federal
Polytechnics, the migration of the lower
cadres on the CONTISSS 15 salary scale,
the release of the white paper on the
visitations to Federal Polytechnics, the
need for the commencement of the
needs assessment of Nigerian
Polytechnics, the worrisome state of
state owned Polytechnics in the country,
the continued appointment of
unqualified persons as Rectors and
Provosts of Nigerian Polytechnics and
Monotechnics by governments."

A middle-aged man, who allegedly snatched
an Automate Teller Machine card from a
woman, narrowly missed being lynched in
Ilorin by a mob on Wednesday.
Our correspondent gathered that the
suspects, whose identity could not be
ascertained as of the time of filing the
report, had snatched the card from the
woman at a first generation bank located at
Taiwo Road of Ilorin.
A source told our correspondent that the
suspect was apprehended by commercial
motorcycle operators (Okada riders) few
minutes after he snatched the card from the
woman, who had just withdrawn money
from the machine.
It was gathered that the suspect had other
five ATM cards, when he was searched.
The source said the okada rider had
gathered used tyres and petrol to mete out
jungle justice to the suspect before
policemen that were on patrol in the area
rescued the suspect.
The policemen, said to be from the B-
Division, Surulere, were said to have
whisked him away.
The source added that the mob allegedly
hurled stones at the police.
In the ensuing pandemonium, an okada
rider was said to have been hit by an object.
Okada riders claimed the object was a bullet
allegedly fired by the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kwara
State command, Mr. Okasanmi Ajayi,
confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

The World Health Organisation has officially
certified Nigeria as a Guinea Worm-Free
Country, the Minister of Health, Prof.
Onyebuchi Chukwu said in Abuja on
Wednesday.
Chukwu disclosed this while presenting the
WHO certificate of clean bill of health, to
President Goodluck Jonathan at the State
House.
The ceremony was held during the first
Federal Executive Council meeting in 2014,
which was presided over by the President at
the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa.
Chukwu said that sequel to the alarming
rate of guinea worm disease in the country
the Nigeria Guinea Worm Eradication
Programme was established in 1988.
He said that with the efforts of the NIGEP,
the country recorded its last case of guinea
worm disease in November 2008.
The Minister, who spoke shortly before
handing the certificate to the President, said
that from 2008 till date, over 900 GWD
rumour reports were received and
investigated nationwide.
He, however, said that none of the cases
was found to be guinea worm disease.
Responding, Jonathan said that it was a
milestone attainment which coincided with
the period “the country is marks its
centenary”.
He said the achievement further attested to
the government’s efforts at ensuring that
the country was rid of all kinds of endemic
diseases.
“The certification by WHO is a global
recognition of how far we have come and
the success of the work that has been done
to rid our nation of this scourge.
“Eradication of guinea worm disease that
has long plagued many parts of our country
has placed interminable burden on our
citizens.
“As a government, we have been working
very hard and today we have received the
good news,” he said.
Jonathan said that a lot had also been
achieved on wild polio eradication.
He said government would double its efforts
to also attain the status of a wild polio free
nation.
“Just as we have fought the incidence of
guinea worm and succeeded so are we
committed in our fight against HIV and AIDS
and many endemic diseases such as Malaria,
Tuberculosis and, of course, polio.
“While polio is yet to be eliminated in our
country, we have seen the impressive results
in the control of wild polio virus type three
transmission.
“We are hopeful that transmission of wild
polio will be interrupted this year, at least
before the end of the year,” the president
said.

A number of
couples struggle with knowing how to
properly discuss the trials that arise in

1. To thy own self be true. Not one of us
is perfect, neither us nor our spouse. It
is always best to start a difficult
conversation by confessing any negative
behaviors you’ve contributed. Take an
honest assessment of your faults and be
prepared to make the needed
alterations. Especially if you will be
expecting the same of your spouse.
2. Speak to your partner the exact same
way you want to be spoken to. Think
about how you best receive information.
Now think about how your spouse best
receives information. Ask yourself
questions like “when is my partner the
most responsive or what causes them to
shut down and what makes my mate
feel comfortable enough to bear all?”
Most People tend to stop listening to a
person they feel is always blaming them
for something. Discussions always work
best when there isn’t finger pointing.
3. Recognize the desired outcome. What
would you like to happen as a result of
your conversation with your spouse? If
your hope is that your mate has a
clearer understanding of your needs,
determine the best way for you to
deliver that information. Is it through a
letter or during a heart-to-heart
conversation? It is helpful to work
backwards so to speak. If you know the
goal it will be easier to line your actions
up to match that goal.
4. Be able to express, to your spouse,
why the situation has affected you the
way it has. Our partners are more likely
to take action if they are able to
understand the concern a certain
situation or challenge has on us. The
only way they will know is if we tell
them. In a trusted partnership it is okay
to be completely vulnerable. Allow your
mate to fully enter your world. Sharing
your feelings and most personal
thoughts and emotions provides that
needed insight.
5. Enter into the conversation with a
clear mind and expectancy. Forget what
you think will happen, even if it may
have been how things have turned out
in the past. Expect a positive result. In
order to do that you must make sure
you have no hidden agendas.
Relationships, marriages in particular, do
not come with a manual. There isn’t a
right or wrong way to have a
relationship. There is, however, an
effective way to communicate. Whenever
we feel like we are putting more effort
into our relationship than our spouse
we must talk about. If we feel like our
mate takes us for granted or never
listens to us, we must talk about it. In
addition to talking we must make sure
we are actively listening as well. Keep in

Unlike in the past, people now no longer try
to find a job immediately after they finish
their schooling and stay with his until they
retire. Nowadays, they are much better in
finding new chances for the jobs. However,

used to be very popular in the past now

look for their dream jobs through the

qualifications to the employers and ask if
those are qualified for the job while the

13. Structured Interview
Normally, Screening Interview is combined
with another technique which is called
structured interview. Due to time limits, in
structure interview, copies of a
questionnaire shall be given to all the
applicants and require them to fill in.
Questions may be about specific duties of
the job, information about the company or
the industry. Nevertheless, the answer shall
then be recollected and compared with
others to select out those most outstanding.

his shoes without complaining and
resentment. Soon I found myself happily
taking care of his shoes and grateful for the

2. Take an interest in what interests them.
My husband loves to golf and watch all
sports on television. I had no interest in
sports. Eventually I realized how much he
did for me and with me. One day I decided
to take golfing lessons and watch sports
with him
3. Make love with your thoughts words
and actions.Making love is not only about
sex. When you have loving think lovingly,
speak lovingly to him and of him your love
life will improve as well. Our brain is our
biggest sex organ. Learn to think love and
speak love and you’ll find yourself more in
love.
4. Learn to be playful and plan fun. Learn
to lighten up. Choose to have a light hearted
and playful attitude. Plan something you
both enjoy. Go away for a weekend once a
season. Life is difficult. Learn to enjoy it
anyway!
5. Practice gratitude. Don’t take your
partner for granted. Keep a journal of the
loving deeds your partner does. Practice
gratitude together while riding in the car or
taking a walk. One person states what they
are grateful for and the other follows.
Continue taking turns until you’ve exhausted
every possibility. Your relationship will
thrive.
6. Catch your partner doing good. Praise
each other. Say thank you at least once a
day! Focus on what’s right and good and
your love for each other will expand.
7. Get help. Don’t ever give up without first
seeking help. That’s the easy way out. My
husband and I sought counseling when all
else failed. Be willing own your own
character defects. You will project all
unfinished business onto your spouse. We
are in each others lives to heal the broken
places. Unhealed stuff follows you until you
resolve it.
8. Go the extra mile. Relationships are
never 50-50. Christopher and Dana Reeve
were a great example of this. Dana gave up
her singing career after Chris’s accident. She
chose to give him everything. I believe their
relationship is an example of unconditional
love.
9. Give each other space. When our
daughters were in high school my mom
helped my husband while I did an
internship in Mexico for three months. He
has always allowed me space to follow my
dreams and have my own friends. He has
always had female friends and colleagues in
his life. When you trust each other you
create a bond like no other.
10. Cherish each other. Never let anything
or any person get in between the two of
you. Support each other. Laugh together
and grow together. I know this works. I
was pregnant and married at 17. We have
been married for 37 plus years, have four
grown daughters, and three grandchildren.
And it just keeps getting better!

Most couples tend to
define their relationship as being good
or bad. However, psychiatrists and
marriage counsellors believe that the
actual term that should define a
relationship is “healthy”. A relationship
(be it a healthy or an unhealthy one), has
to pass through testing times. If you too

1. Mutual respect
This is an ultimate test for any
relationship. Respecting your partner is

abuse. Also, being repeatedly
badmouthed by the in-laws despite your

to being psychologically abused. If such
things are part of your relationship, it is
certainly not healthy.
4. Being happy for each other comes
naturally
If you two can feel happy for each other
for the smallest of accomplishments, it
indicates a healthy relationship. For
instance, if your wife is praised by her
boss, it is a reason enough for you to
feel happy for her. Similarly, the smallest
layer of muscle your husband has added
through his gymming makes you kiss
him with adoration. These are strong
indications that your bond does not
need significant happenings to make
you feel happy for the other person.
5. Minimal boredom
This is perhaps the most common
relationship challenge till date. Most
couples, who have a difficult time
dealing with their couplehood (including
the newlyweds), keep talking about a
certain kind of boredom that has set in
their relationship. Though this is an
inevitable part of any relationship, the
boredom should not become
overwhelming. So much so, that you no
longer wait for the ‘exclusive moments’
with him or her. If it has been more than

When being honest, and I mean, being
brutally honest with each other is not an

than done, since sharing what you

During CES 2014 it was revealed that
Samsung is gearing up to release a new
flagship smartphone in March or April,
naturally destined to be the successor to the
hugely popular Galaxy S4. With a release only
months away,SamMobile has received some
details on the handset from an "insider",
giving us an idea of what to expect.
Previously we heard that Samsung may turn
to metal for the body of the Galaxy S5, but
SamMobile claims that the company will
release both a plastic and metal variant of
the device. The idea here is that the metal
variant would be the premium model
reportedly costing around €800 (US$1090),
with the plastic model coming in at a
cheaper €650 (US$890). Whether the two
variants will contain different internals
remains unknown.
Rumored specifications for the Galaxy S5
include a 2560 x 1440 AMOLED display
around 5.25-inches in size, plus a 16-
megapixel rear camera. Like with the Galaxy
S4 and Galaxy Note 3, Samsung will use both
upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon and
Samsung Exynos SoCs to power the Galaxy
S5.
The Snapdragon 805 is slated for inclusion
in the Galaxy S5, featuring a 2.5 GHz quad-
core Krait 450 CPU, Adreno 420 GPU and a
fast LPDDR3 memory controller providing up
to 25.6 GB/s of bandwidth. An Exynos 6 SoC
will also feature in some models (likely the
premium metal model), likely packing an
eight-core 64-bit CPU and a powerful next-
gen GPU.
SamMobile also reports that the Galaxy S5
mini and Galaxy S5 Zoom will be launched
after the Galaxy S5, with announcements
scheduled for June and May respectively.
Both devices will pack AMOLED displays and
Android 4.4 'KitKat', but not much else is
known beyond that.

The Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin,
Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has said the
institution admitted only 8,587 out of
103,211 candidates that applied to the
university for admission for the current
session. He stated that 26,442 of the
candidates met the minimum requirement
of 180 scores in the Universal Tertiary
Matriculation Examination. He added that
16,123 of the candidates passed the

institution’s matriculation in Ilorin on
Friday. He lamented the limited admission
space in the school. Ambali also said the
institution would expel any of its students
found to be engaged in cult activities.
Warning the students against indulging or
involvement in cult-related activities, he
stated that the varsity had a zero tolerance
for cultism. He also cautioned the students
against indecent dressing. Ambali said,
“The university has its rules and
regulations. This university, which many of
you (the matriculating students) have heard
so much about before your admission, has
zero tolerance for indiscipline as the
University is passionately committed to
taking your generation to greater heights.
You are the future of Nigeria and Nigeria of
the future is you. “The discipline we exhibit
here makes this university unique. For
instance, there is no cultism or other illegal
associations here and we shall not allow it.
“As education essentially is a process of
cultural transmission and renewal, the
university has a dress code which
essentially involves decent dressing.”

The Office of the Special Adviser to the
President on Niger Delta Affairs on
Monday in Abuja said it had offered
scholarships to 35 Niger Delta youths.
The Special Adviser to the President on Niger
Delta Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, said the
scholarships were for undergraduate and
post graduate programmes in universities in
the United Kingdom.
Kuku said this at the Offshore Orientation
and Departure Programme organised for
the beneficiaries.
Kuku, who was represented by the Head of
Reintegration Department in the office, Mr.
Larry Pepple, said the purpose was to
develop the capacity of youths in the area.
He said 31 Itsekiri and four Ijaw youths
were the latest group of beneficiaries in the
scheme offered by his office.
The presidential aide urged the beneficiaries
to behave well while pursuing their studies.
He said the beneficiaries got the scholarship
because their communities were affected by
militancy and oil exploration.
The head, education unit in the office, Mr.
Eugene Abels, urged the beneficiaries to
always save some money to avoid hardship
in the event of delay in the payment of their
stipends.
Abels, who said the office was responsible
for their tuition fees and stipends, urged
them to adhere strictly to the laws of their
host country.
