Archaeologists in Israel have uncovered
intricate mosaics on the floor of a 1,500-
year-old Byzantine church, including one
that bears a Christogram surrounded by
birds.

The ruins were discovered during a salvage
excavation ahead of a construction project
in Aluma, a village about 50 kilometers south
of Tel Aviv, the Israel Antiquities Authority
(IAA) announced Wednesday (Jan. 22).
Much of the church was revealed during
excavations over the past month. The
basilica was part of a local Byzantine
settlement, but the archaeologists suspect it
also served as a center of Christian worship
for neighboring communities because it
was next to the main road running between
the ancient seaport city of Ashkelon in the
west and Beit Guvrin and Jerusalem in the
east.
Remarkable finds
The excavators plan to keep working on the
site for another week, but one of the most
remarkable finds so far was a mosaic
containing a Christogram, or a type of
monogram of the name of Jesus.
At the time, Byzantine Christians wouldn’t
have put crosses on their mosaic floors so
as to not step on the symbol of Christ,. The
Christogram in the mosaic may look like a
cross, but it’s actually more like a “chi rho”
symbol, which puts together the first two
captial letters in the Greek word for Christ,
and often looks like an X superimposed on a
P. There is an alpha and omega (the first and
last letters of the Greek alphabet) on either
side of the chi rho, which is another
Christian symbol, as Christ was often
described as the “the beginning and the
end.” Four birds also decorate the mosaic,
and two of them are holding up a wreath to
the top of the chi rho.
Inside the 22-by-12-meter basilica,
archaeologists also found marble pillars and
an open courtyard paved with a white
mosaic floor.
Just off the courtyard, in the church’s
narthex, or lobby area, there is a fine mosaic
floor decorated with colored geometric
designs, as well as a twelve-row dedicatory
inscription in Greek containing the names
‘Mary’ and ‘Jesus’, and the name of the
person who funded the mosaic’s
construction.
The mosaics in the main hall, or nave,
meanwhile, are decorated with vine tendrils
in the shape of 40 medallions, one of which
contains the Christogram. Many of the other
medallions contain botanical designs and
animals such as a zebras, peacocks, leopards
and wild boars, the excavators said. Three
contain inscriptions commemorating two
heads of the local regional church named
Demetrios and Herakles.

Other discoveries
The archaeologists found traces of later
occupation on top of the church, including
early Islamic walls and Ottoman garbage
pits. (Aluma is located near the Ottoman and
later Palestinian village of Hatta.) The
excavations also revealed Byzantineglass
vessels and a pottery workshop for making
amphoras, cooking pots, kraters, bowls and
oil lamps.
Regarding the new discoveries, the IAA
plans to remove the mosaic for display at a
regional museum or visitors’ center, and the
rest of the site will be covered back up.

Wara residents in Ngaski Local Government
Area of Kebbi are keeping vigil over their
lives, livestock and rice farms following
frequent appearances of Hippopotamus and
Crocodiles at River Niger bank.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that
Wara is the administrative headquarters of
Ngaski Local Government with a population
of 124,766 people on an area covering
2,633km.
The Chairman of the council, Alhaji
Mahmoud Muhammad, told the News
Agency of Nigeria on Friday that the
appearance of the wild animals had been
regular.
Muhammad said the wild animals were from
the Kainji National Game Reserve.
“The appearance of crocodiles and
hippopotamus has so far not resulted in any
loss of lives, rice farms or livestock.
“But we remain very alert in spite of
excitement of the view the animals.
“The animals stayed close to the community
for between three weeks and a month and
people are used to them, but we remain
very alert,’’ Muhammad said.
A resident of the community, Mr Musa Ali,
said hunters and fishermen had been
watchful over the animals at the river bank
to protect the community.
“We caution fishermen and commercial boat
owners to avoid areas that the animals are
located until they return deep into the river,’’
Ali said.

Adekunle Hussain, revealed the information

Lagos had remained the state with highest
remittance to the contributory pension
scheme in the country. Speaking during the
retraining of 1,200 workers who are due
for retirement between January and June,
2014, Hussain said the usual tradition would
adequately prepare employees in the state
public service towards their retirement. He
said the commitment demonstrated by
Governor Babatunde Fashola made it
possible for the 3,900 workers who had
retired under the scheme to continue to
enjoy their retirement benefits, saying the
state had paid N21.4bn as at the end of
2013. According to him, the seminar
organised in collaboration with the state’s
approved Pension Fund Administrators
(PFAs) and Insurance Companies, was
designed to further broaden the knowledge
of the would-be retirees on how best to
prepare for their retirement and access their
retirement benefits under the Contributory
Pension Scheme (CPS). He said: “The pre-
retirement seminar is aimed at assisting the
prospective retirees to adequately prepare
for their physical, emotional and financial
well-being in retirement as well as afford
them the benefit of being in a better
position and frame of mind to build a
comfortable and rewarding life in
retirement”.

As the three-day nationwide warning strike
called by the Joint Health Sector Unions,
JOHESU, in league with the Association of
Health Professionals ends today, services
were paralysed for the second day in most
health institutions nationwide.
This was even as the striking members of
the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU,
meeeting with the Labour Minister, Chief
Emeka Wogu and his counterpart in the
Ministry of Health, Professor Onyebuchi
Chukwu, was inconclusive. It was said that
both parties could not agree.
The striking unions had earlier vowed not to
attend any conciliation meeting that lacks
government representation, insisting that
this was the only guarantee that decisions
taken would be implemented.
In Lagos, the general atmosphere in most
hospitals visited showed that the strike was
total, and only medical doctors were around
to render services, which was a difficult
exercise due to inaccessibility of support
services from nurses, pharmacists,
physiotherapists, laboratory scientists, etc.
Although the doctors went extra length to
care for patients on admission in the wards,
intake of new patients remained suspended
as they were advised to seek care in private
hospitals pending the termination of the
strike.
Patients who turned up in the various
hospitals were not attended to. At the Lagos
University teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba
and Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta,
virtually all the outpatient clinics were under
lock and key. Several patients were hurriedly
discharged to cushion the absence of
nurses and other health care workers.
A doctor who spoke on condition of
anonymity said doctors were not involved in
the strike. He said they were on duty and
saw some patients with critical health
conditions
In Benue State, services were grounded at
hospitals within and around Makurdi the
state capital. Most of them were deserted
except for medical doctors who were seen
providing skeletal clinical services to patients
with critical health conditions.
At the Makurdi Federal Medical Centre and
the Makurdi General Hospital there was total
compliance as no nurse was seen on duty,
same for other non medical staff who
stayed away from work as directed by
JOHESU.
When contacted, the Chairman of JOHESU,
Federal Medical Centre chapter, Comrade
Moses Shausu said there had been full
compliance by members of the union.
A visit to Nnamdi Azikiwe University
Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi, revealed
that the hospital has been reduced to a
shadow of itself. Several relatives were seen
withdrawing their sick from the hospital.
Branch Chairman, JOHESU, Comrade Gerald
Adinma who spoke with newsmen in
Nnewi, warned that the ongoing warning
strike may transform to an indefinite strike
if the Federal Government fails to change its
attitude.
He pointed out the rumoured plan to
privatize the laboratory, pharmacy and
accounts departments in the teaching
hospitals would be met with a stiff
resistance because it would be an evil wind
that would not do the health sector any
good.
Adinma said that if the Federal Government
thought that it could save cost through
privatization. It should start with the medical
doctors who goes home with jumbo
salaries outside having their private
hospitals.

The idea that Google’s Android mobile
software is both “free” and open-source is
so often repeated that it is virtually an article
of faith online. There’s only one problem:
neither is strictly true.
While the basic Android software is indeed
available for free, and can be downloaded,
compiled and changed by anyone, it doesn’t
include the apps that make up Google’s
mobile services - such as Maps, Gmail, and
crucially Google Play, which allows people to
connect to the online store where they can
download apps.
Without them, a device has only minimal
functionality.
To get the key apps, a manufacturer needs a
“Google Mobile Services” (GMS) licence. Just
like Microsoft with Windows and Windows
Phone, GMS licences are charged on a per-
device basis - so that for example a
company looking to ship 100,000 units of a
tablet would have to pay about US$75,000, a
source in the Android device community
told the Guardian.
Google activates more than 1 million
devices with GMS licences every day
That suggests a per-device revenue of 75
cents, compared to the $15 or so Microsoft
is believed to charge for Windows Phone
licences. With Google activating more than a
million devices with GMS licences every day,
that suggests that Android licensing
generates less than $100m per quarter -
minuscule compared with Google’s revenues
of $13.7bn in the third quarter of 2013.
The source said Google was being
intentionally vague about the fact that it
receives a licence payment for every device
that runs Android with its services. “It is a
lot of money they make, but you can’t see it
anywhere [in Google’s accounts] because
that would tarnish their ‘Android open-
source’ karma,” the source said.
However, there’s no definitive price list for
GMS licences; Google is understood to vary
this depending on the number of devices
being ordered and the size of the
manufacturer or retailer. “Deals are done on
an individual basis and are very opaque,”
one source in the Android device
community, who didn’t want to be
identified, told the Guardian.
Google didn’t respond to a request for
information about GMS pricing, and there is
no publicly available list online.
Haphazard and time-consuming
But the process of getting GMS licences
appears to be haphazard and time-
consuming.
“Installing Google Play without a GMS licence
is illegal,” the source said. But, they
explained, Google “don’t have the internal
manpower to police it properly. It’s a volume
game. Big OEMs [device manufacturers] pay.
Smaller OEMs don’t register in Google’s
radar, and they [Google] tend to turn a blind
eye. Retailers get pressured by legal OEMs to
make sure illegal installs of GMS are weeded
out. It’s almost like crowdsourcing.”
That “crowdsourcing” seems to have been
KMS Components’ downfall. Argos
complained to the Welsh company that the
MyTablet which it had provided did not have
a GMS licence. This was after Argos had
publicly promoted the tablet as excitement
about a “tablet Christmas” ramped up
following Tesco’s announcement in
September that it would sell its Hudl 7in
tablet.
Although Google could take out injunctions
to prevent retailers selling unlicensed tablets
that include GMS, there’s no record of it ever
having done so. However in August 2010
Augen Electronics, the maker of a $150
tablet being sold through the giant
American retail chain Kmart, abruptly
withdrew it from sale there because it
included “unauthorised versions” of the GMS
suite.
Compatibility club
Separately, trial documents released from a
dispute between Google and Skyhook, a
provider of location services,in 2011
revealed internal emails in which Dan Morrill
of Google told another staffer that it’s
“obvious to the OEMs that we are using
[GMS] compatibility as a club to make them
do what we want.” Motorola, then an
independent company, told Skyhook that
Android devices are “approved essentially at
Google’s discretion”. Skyhook had wanted
Android device makers to use its location
service rather than Google’s.
Android compatibility testing is a key
precursor step to being awarded a GMS
licence. But such testing, and subsequently
getting a licence from Google, can be a test
in its own right, sources say. One described
having to take the matter up with a senior
Google vice-president to get the GMS
licensing approved. “Smaller OEMs lose out,
as they have a hard time getting the GMS
licence, and therefore have little alternative
but to go without it,” the source said.
Yet it is possible to bypass that. End-users
can legally install the GMS suite of apps if
they know how to.
The idea that Android is “open source” is
partially true: the source code for the
software is available online, via Google’s
servers, and anyone can download it and
make changes - as Amazon, for example, has
done to create its own version for its Kindle
line of tablets.
But unlike the vast majority of widely used
open-source projects such as Linux, MySQL,
PHP or Python, which welcome outside
contributors, only people working inside
Google can make changes that will become
part of the future direction of the software.
Device manufacturers who want to get the
upcoming version of Android have to wait
for it to become available from Google’s
servers.

19 year old teen sensation Justin Bieber was
this morning arrested for drinking under
the influence, drag racing in Miami beach
and resisting arrest,TMZ reports.
"Law enforcement tells us ... Bieber was
busted in Miami Beach and it didn't end
with DUI ... he was also busted for resisting
arrest without violence, drag racing and
driving on an expired license.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... they
believe Justin was under the influence of
both drugs and alcohol.
We're told the resisting arrest charge stems
from Bieber refusing to take his hands out
of his pockets when ordered to do so by
cops.
Bieber is now in custody and is at the police
department where he is being tested --
presumably to more precisely measure his
blood alcohol level. Our law enforcement
sources say Justin was given a field sobriety
test at the scene ... and failed. His next stop
will be jail, where he will be booked and
processed and bail will be set.
We're told Bieber had just left a club and
was driving a yellow Lamborghini at the
time cops spotted him in a residential
neighborhood.  Our sources say Justin's
people actually blocked the street off so
Bieber could drag race.
Sources say the person Justin was racing
with was also arrested. We're told that
driver was Khalil, a well-known rapper on
Def Jam Records.  He was in a red Lambo.
Justin had a passenger in the car -- a model.
The traffic stop was for drag racing and
cops determined he was driving under the
influence.

Women are taught to be independent
women, but not how to be wives and
mothers. And men are taught how to be
providers, but not how to be husbands

family. Every decision you make
represents them as well.
The skills and mindset you used to
become successful in your education
and your career are great skills, but
when you decide to be in a relationship
or marriage you may just need to go
back to school. Having a Masters in
business won’t help you if you make F’s
in communication skills at home. Being a
CEO at your company won’t help you if
you have no training in compromise.
Making six figures wont help you if you
are bankrupt in the service of others
department. Being a leader in your
company won’t help if you can’t lead by
example in your household.
