The truth is that in-law
created conflicts can lead to divorce! A
lot of people believe that having a good
relationship with your in-laws is crucial
to maintaining your marriage. And they
are right to a certain extent. I believe
that having a good relationship with
your in laws could definitely enhance
your marriage. However, not everyone
gets that kind of happily ever after
because of mean and messy in laws that
will do everything in their power to
destroy your union. You and your
spouse can most definitely survive AND
thrive without having that mutual
affection. If you and your spouse have
done all that you can to foster a
relationship with the opposing family, to
no avail, then you must do what you
have to survive and most importantly
maintain your marriage.
Here are 9 Ways to Survive in your
Marriage When Your In Laws Hate You
1. Don’t take anything personal.
A lot of times, the problem that in laws
have isn’t with you its with your spouse.
There may be something that your
spouse used to do for them that they
don’t do anymore because you came
into the picture. They may believe that
you have taken something from them.
Most families are very protective when it
comes to their children. Sometimes this
protection turns into an obsession. It
means that nobody will ever be good
enough. They often times will direct this
anguish at you. Recognize this and don’t
take it personal.
2. Don’t blame your spouse for their
behavior.
Your spouse cannot be held responsible
for the behavior of another adult. When
your in laws behave in a less than
desirable ways towards you, don’t blame
your spouse. It is not their fault, they
can’t do anything about it. Blaming and
ultimatums only lead to arguments and
resentment. Don’t do it.
3. Keep the lines of communication open
with your spouse.
Tell them how you are feeling. Let them
know when something bothers you.
Encourage them to express how they
feel. A lot of times your spouse may not
be aware that you have been offended
or feel disrespected. Instead of grinning
and bearing it, release it, so that it can
be calmly discussed.
4. Don’t buy into it.
If your in laws are really hateful and
dislike you, then they are going to love
knowing that they have provided drama
for you. Things like calling you by the
ex’s name or excluding you are all
childishly purposeful behaviors. They
feed off of your negative reaction. Don’t
buy into it. It will only add kindle to their
fire and encourage them.
5. Pick your battles.
Of course there are going to be some
situations that you will not be able to
quietly walk away from. However, you
must not make every situation into a
major one. Don’t make a fuss about
every little thing. Choose the lines that
you have that won’t be crossed and
choose very carefully. Set the
boundaries, and as long as they mind
those lines everything else should be
brushed off.
6. Keep a united front.
Your happiness with your spouse is
your victory! Your successful marriage is
your sword. They cannot bring it to you
if you have created a united front that
they know they cannot penetrate. You
don’t have to be fake about it. Just be
real and be happy. Your solidarity is in
your love for one another. Remember
that a weak front can be easily
penetrated by the enemy.
7. Don’t hold grudges.
A lot of times your in laws may need you
to grow on them. If they caused drama
for you in the beginning of your
marriage, but appear to be cool with
you now. Let it go and go with it. Do not
carry that initial experience with you. Get
over it, move forward. Forgive and try
your best to forget.
8. Don’t ever use your children as pawns.
Whether they care for you or not, don’t
keep your kids away from them (unless
there are safety issues). Your kids are
their blood and deserve to know their
people. Don’t let the kids suffer because
of ignorant behavior. And don’t bad
mouth them in front of your children
either.
9. Always be cordial and respectful.
Dignity goes a long way. Hold your head
high and represent your family. Don’t
stoop to levels that are lower than you.
Be cordial & respectful because thats the
right way to be. Ignore snide remarks
and comments. Don’t allow yourself to
be goaded into an argument.
Doing all of these things might be hard.
You might be saying to yourself, “I am
not doing any of it!” or you may have
already given up. It’s never too late. If
you think about these actions before
REacting you will avoid so much
unnecessary stress, negativity and
drama…which is what they want!
Ultimately in the end, you will win and
your mate will respect your ability to stay
in control. The view of the
troublemakers in their family will change
once they see who the aggressors really
are.
You will be showing your children how
to carry themselves as respectful adults
by not arguing and being involved in
negative interactions. I read something
one time that went something like,
“Never argue with a fool, because a
stranger may walk by and not be able to
tell who is who.” Well it’s true, so don’t
do it! Life is too short to live your life
with regrets. Understand your position
with your mates family and handle it
accordingly. Don’t let anything come
between your love and commitment to
your spouse. If their family does not
accept you, then so be it. It does not
have to destroy your marriage. And if all
else fails, you can just drink a lot of wine
whenever you are around them! Then
you won’t care!

Health and Welfare / 5 Signs That Tell Your Partner Doubts You
« on: January 26, 2014, 06:14:53 pm »
Couples, who have been in a relationship
for a while, often tend to act more
casually around each other. As romance
takes a backseat, suspicions begin to
crawl in. Doubts in a relationship often
go unnoticed. It takes a long time to see
behind the façade and know that your
partner doubts you. So, let us tell you
about the signs that will help you check
out if your partner doubts you and your
commitment towards the relationship.
1. Turn around and they are there
No matter where you look, you always
find your partner hovering around. At
first you think it is sweet that you keep
running into each other, but think again.
If you keep catching up with them,
everywhere you go, then you can safely
read that as a sign that your partner has
successfully turned into a stalker. To
confirm your suspicions, drop in some
casual hints about where you are going
and then check whether your partner
drops in, without telling you.
2. Possessive interrogation
Has your partner started asking
questions like “whom were you talking
to?” or “with whom did you go out?” or
“why you are so late?” If the answer is
yes, then congratulations, you have won
yourself a possessive partner who
doubts you. You don’t have to confirm
any suspicions in such a situation, once
you come face-to-face with the same
volley of question you will realise it,
sooner or later.
3. Tiptoes around your virtual life
Does your partner stealthily keeps a tab
on your social networking profile and
updates? If yes, then surely he or she
will not be able to fight the urge of
checking your phone, whenever you are
not around. Your partner may even go
one step further to check out your
received and sent emails. So, next time
your partner asks you about your last
status update or about the people
messaging you, it is time for you to
realise that he or she doubts you.
4. Changing temperament
If your partner doubts you then you will
often find him or her stressed and
nervous. Flaring temper with
unnecessary talks and taunts becomes a
common scene in your love life.
Suspicious and sarcastic tone, along
with illogical fight topics and asking odd
questions are very common signs that
your partner’s behavioural change is
directly tuned with his or her trust
issues.
5. Involving friends and family
Does your partner call your friends to
enquire about you? Does he or she drop
by your home or work place for surprise
visits? These are some common signs of
doubt. Your partner may casually keep
talking to your friends about your social
life, emphasising on your friends of
opposite s*x.
These doubts only develop out of
insecurity in the relationship. So, it is
important that you make your partner
understand his or her importance in
your life.

school? Or are you looking for a more
favourable place of employment?
Here is a list of the top 10 companies to
work for in Nigeria, according
to Jobberman.com.
“Jobberman.com conducted more than
10,000 surveys of employees in Nigeria.
Over 5000 companies were submitted
by 10,482 respondents (experienced,
entry level and exec management). 89%

gainfully employed. Only companies with
at least 100 full-time permanent
employees were considered.
The index was calculated by getting a
weighted average of each recipient’s top
5 companies and dream company to
work for. Recipients also selected
workplace metrics that mattered to
them in making these choices –
Company Culture, Salary, Non-Salary
Benefits, proximity to Company Location,
Prestige/Company Brand, Management
Integrity and commitment to staff
welfare.“
Based on these criterion, they have
come up with this list of top ten

Ninety two-year-old Madam Juliana
Onuora from Nkpor, in Idemili North
Council Area of Anambra State is now
engrossed in a battle of wits with the
Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha over a
church she built and donated to the
Diocese in 1985.
In a petition sent to Pope Francis, Madam
Onuora alleged that her life is in danger
following the precipitating crises over
ownership of the land where Our Lady
Catholic Church is built.
Though the Onitsha Archdiocese is not
disputing the fact that the church was built
on a piece of land belonging to the woman,
the bone of contention is that the church
had been built by the woman and dedicated
to God and therefore ceases to belong to
her.
In Catholic tradition, no one owns a church
and even when an individual builds one and
donates to the Church, and when it is
consecrated by the bishop, it ceases to
belong to the person but to the Diocese.
The ugly incidents that follow the lingering
land tussle between the church and the
family of Onuora had degenerated into a
serious war, which led to the burning down
of the parish priest's building by irate
youths suspected to be working on the
orders of the daughter to the 92-year-old
woman.
As a result, the entire compound including
the church and other surrounding buildings
have been cordoned off by policemen from
the Police Zonal Headquarters, Zone 9
Umuahia to forestall further breakdown of
law and order as the youths of Our Lady
Catholic Church are already spoiling for war
over the alleged attack on the parish priest,
Rev Fr. Martin Onukuba by hoodlums
allegedly working on the instruction of
Madam Onuora's family.

Is the Wi-Fi stuck in the off position on your
Android smartphone? When you try to
switch the Wi-Fi on does it turn itself off all
by itself? Have you tried to turn the Wi-Fi
from your Android device on only to find
that the phone won’t let you? Here are some
things that you can do to fix a phone when
its Wi-Fi refuses to turn on.
There can be a few things that can cause
these issues to happen on an Android cell
phone. Sometimes it can be a hardware
related problem but this issue is often a
software related problem that can creep up
on your device after upgrading the phones
software. This is a good thing as software
issues can usually be fixed with just a little
bit of troubleshooting, hardware issues on
the other hand can be a little harder to fix.
So let’s start with the basics and go from
there…
POWER CYCLE THE PHONE
Start out by power cycling your device. This
is often the first step in troubleshooting an
Android smartphone and believe it or not,
simply power cycling your phone can solve
minor software related issues that can occur
on Android devices.
So power the phone off for 15-60 seconds,
if your phone has a removable battery then
briefly pulling out the phones battery is one
of the best things to do as it assures the
phone is completely powered off. If you
cannot remove the battery from your phone
then don’t worry, just power the phone off
wait for 30 seconds to a minute and then
power the phone back on.
When your cell phone fully powers on, try
turning the Wi-Fi on to see if power cycling
fixed it. If it’s working then enjoy your Wi-Fi
if it’s still being stubborn and the Wi-Fi won’t
switch on then keep reading.
HARDWARE
If the Wi-Fi wont power on at all, then there
is a possibility that its due to an actual piece
of the phone being disconnected, loose, or
malfunctioning. If a flex cable has come
undone or the Wi-Fi antenna is not
connected properly then the phone is
certainly going to have problems connecting
to a wireless network.
If your phone is less than a year old and has
no signs of physical or liquid damage then
chances are good that your phone is still
covered under the manufactures warranty
and you DO NOT want to take the phone
apart as it will be considered tampering and
will void your cell phones warranty, which
you don’t want to do.
So here is what I recommend doing first
before trying any software troubleshooting
or filing a warranty or insurance claim.
*~DISCLAIMER -- BE GENTLE and USE CAUTION
when trying this next suggestion, you do
NOT want to cause any damage to your
phone and make your current situation
worse~* --I will not be held accountable for
any damage done to the phone when trying
my next suggestion--.
Gently, and carefully give your phone a good
shake, don’t let it slip out of your hand, fall
to the floor and cause its screen to shatter.
You can also give it a few gentle love taps on
the back of the phone, (don’t hit and break
the screen, I recommend tapping the back
of the phone).
After tapping or shaking the phone, test the
Wi-Fi and see if it started functioning
properly. It may take a few attempts to get a
lose cable or piece of hardware back into its
proper place. So if at first you don’t succeed
you may need to try a few more times.
If it starts working again, then you have
narrowed it down to a hardware issue and
you’re now faced with a few options…
You can keep using the phone as the
piece of hardware may stay where it’s
supposed to and you can keep enjoying
your working Wi-Fi.
You can keep using the phone and if the
Wi-Fi acts up again you can give it another
shake or tap to get it to work properly
again. Just be careful as this might get
frustrating if it starts happening
frequently and you don’t want to
accidently damage your phone by hitting
or not so gently tapping it against a hard
surface out of frustration.
You can keep using the phone until the
Wi-Fi acts up again and then file a
warranty claim. If you are no longer under
warranty you can consider taking the
phone apart to locate and try to fix the
problematic hardware, which may be as
simple as pressing a wire or cable back
into place, in which case you will have a
more permanent solution to your Wi-Fi
problem.
SOFTWARE
If it doesn’t seem to work after a little
shaking or tapping then this could be a
software related issue.
Check your applications
Try to think back to when this issue first
started happening on your phone. Do you
remember downloading or installing any
applications around that time? Often when
software issues start happening on an
Android phone it’s because of an application
causing problems. If this is the case then
uninstall any apps that you might have
installed around that time, test the Wi-Fi and
see if the app was the cause. If it was an
app then you can try installing the app again
to see if a fresh install helps or consider
using the phone without that app until its
app developer releases a more up-to-date or
friendly version of that application.
Hard reset
If you go through your apps and do some
cleaning on your phone then there is still the
chance of a software problem on the device
and the BEST way to resolve software
related issues is to completelybackup and
reset your Android phone. This puts the
phone back to its factory default settings
and wipes everything from the phone. So
any software bugs, glitches, viruses, etc are
wiped off the phone and the phone is set
back to the way it was when it was first
purchased.
A hard reset is usually a last resort but it’s a
very powerful tool when trying to resolve
software issues.
CONCLUSION
After performing the suggestions listed
above your Wi-Fi should be working
properly once again. So enjoy the working
Wi-Fi on your cell phone.
If the Wi-Fi on your mobile phone still
refuses to turn on then there is little more
that you can do to try and resolve the issue
yourself. If this is the case and your Wi-Fi still
isn’t switching on then you might want to
consider some ofthese options. If the Wi-Fi
on your Android is turning on but is having
problems scanning, connecting, or staying
connected with a wireless network or
establishing an internet connection then
you might consider reading

Reports from Bori, the headquarters of
Ogoni, shows that a good number of thugs
armed with different dangerous weapons
are loitering around the venue of the Save
Rivers Movement rally re-scheduled for
today, Saturday.
The rally was botched last week when
armed men stormed the venue of the rally
shooting sporadically, which left scores
injured.
However, DailyPost learnt that sounds of
gunshots were being heard since 3 am.
The Joseph Mbu led police command has
claimed that the command did not get any
notification for the rally.
In the meantime, the protocol department,
including Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s
security team have headed to the venue to
possibly quell the rising tension in Ogoni.
It could be recalled that after the failed rally,
Amaechi told the media that he would lead
the re-schesuled rally personally.

At least three people were yesterday feared
dead and seven rescued from a boat which
capsised at Ogogoro village, Boulos in Navy
Town located in Apapa area of Lagos State.
Speaking with newsmen on the tragedy, the
director of the Lagos State Emergency
Management Agency, (LASEMA) Dr. Femi Oke
Osanyintolu, said three people were feared
drowned in the mishap while seven were
rescued.
He said: “A local passenger boat with ten
passengers capsised. It was going from
coconut jetty, Apapa to Ojo town. It capsised
behind. Seven were rescued while three are
missing. The boat’s take off point was Irewe
near Ijegun in Satelite.”
He said the boat which was conveying
women and children were travelling on the
high sea at about 12 midnight without
headlight and collided with a bigger boat.
Osanyintolu said the occupants were
rescued by the Nigerian Navy Special Unit,
officers of the National Inland Waterways
Agency (NIWA), Lagos State Emergency
Management Agency (LASEMA) and National
Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)
The LASEMA boss appealed to local canoe
users to always use life jackets when
moving with their canoes on the high sea.
Also confirming the incident, NEMA in a
statement by its spokesman, Ibrahim
Farinloye, said seven persons were rescued
alive, saying they included a woman, child,
the boat operator, among others.
Farinloye said the survivors have been taken
to undisclosed hospital in Apapa area of the
state.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) says nearly
6,000 people have fled the northern parts
of Nigeria due to the activities of Boko
Haram to neighbouring Cameroon and
Niger in the past 10 days.
UNHCR in its reports made available at the
UN Headquarters in New York on Friday,
reported that several people had been
killed, their villages bombed and at least
two villages burned to the ground.
“We continue to urge states in the region to
keep their borders open for Nigerians who
are fleeing their country and may need
international protection.
“We are also advising against any forced
returns,’’ the report quoted the UNHCR
spokesperson, Adrian Edwards, as saying.
States of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe have
been under state-of-emergency since May
2013 as the army fights Boko Haram
insurgents.
“Of the more than 4,000, who fled to
Cameroon since mid-January, most are in
the Logone-et-Chari area of Far North
Region.
“With this new influx, there are now 12,428
Nigerian refugees in Cameroon, according
to local Cameroonian authorities. Of that
number 2,183 have so far been moved to a
UNHCR camp at Minawao, 130 kilometres
further inland.
“Together with partner agencies we are
providing refugees with shelter, health,
sanitation, education, food, and other help,’’
UNHCR said.
The agency noted that its team in
Cameroon’s far North region had spoken
with refugees from the area around Banki,
a town just across the border in Nigeria’s
Borno State.
“The refugees said their villages were
bombed, that several people had been
killed, and that at least two villages were
burned to the ground,” it said.
According to UNHCR, in Niger, 1,500 new
refugees, mostly women and children,
arrived in the Diffa region of south-east
Niger.
It added that the refugees said that they
fled because of Jan. 16 attack of a mosque
in the village of Gashagar, just across the
border.
Seven people were reportedly killed during
the attack, and seven cars and 60 shops
were burned. (NAN)

Latest Gists In Town / Council arrests 122 for violating sanitation law
« on: January 25, 2014, 05:04:38 pm »
No fewer than 122 persons were arrested
on Saturday in Badagry West Local Council
Development Area for violating the monthly
sanitation order.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that
some of the violators were arrested around
Seme border and the rest in Badagry.
Chairman of the council, Mr Hontonyon
Bamgbose, who monitor the exercise,
decried the apathy of the violators.
“It is amazing how people keep on violating
the sanitation law when they were
supposed to stay at home for just three
hours to clean their environment.
“It goes to show the nonchalant attitude of
some people in obeying simple rules and
regulations.
“I hope people will learn and change to help
this nation in becoming better”, Bangbose
said.
Bamgbose also lamented that some security
personnel were not helping in enforcing the
law as they were seen conveying
passengers during the sanitation period.
“It is sad to see some security personnel,
who are supposed to be enforcers of the
law, conveying passengers during the
exercise”, Bangbose stressed.
NAN reports that the violators were fined
N5,000 each while those who could not
afford the fine were transferred to the
Special Offenses Court in Alausa, Ikeja.

1. “Bon Ben”
Pronunciation: bone-baaa
Meaning: Absolutely nothing. Seriously. It’s
really just filer and indicates a shift, like “Ok
well” or “alright then” or “welp.”
You might say: “Bon ben, it was lovely
seeing you, gurl, but I gotta bounce!”
2. “C’est pas vrai”
Pronunciation: say pah vray
Meaning: “You’re kidding! No way!” Used as
a reply to mark your surprise at something
just said.
Someone says to you: “I finally banged my
professor.” Then you are all: “(gasp) C’est
pas vrai!!! Yaaaaaass.” And then they are
like: “Oh yes, girl. It is totally vrai! Get into
how vrai it is!”
3. “Hyper”
Pronunciation: eee-pair
Meaning: A lot! Very!
You might say: “We went out dancing last
night and it was hyper fun ya’ll.”
4. “Merde”
Pronunciation: may-yerde
Meaning: ****!
You might say: (stubbing your toe) Merde!
5. “Non mais allo quoi”
Pronunciation: No may aloe qwah.
Meaning: This was made popular by the Kim
Kardashian of France, so you know it’s
excellent French. In order these words spell
out “No but hello what.” Which means
nothing. I’d put it as…”Hello? Is anybody
there?” and I’d liken this to the way we use
hi in English. “It’s like hi, are you just going
to sit there and watch me do the dishes?”
You might say: Did she think I was seriously
going to let her borrow my Saint Laurent
pumps? Non mais allo quoi.
6. “C’est too much/c’est un peu too much”
Pronunciation: Don’t be silly, you can do it!
KEY: the “too much” must be pronounced in
French.
Meaning: Demonstration of a surplus of
something, particularly as related to fashion.
Example: Oh really? You’re taking it there?
That’s where we’re going? This one’s great
because everyone can use it, right now.

too much.
7. “C’est pas possible”
Pronunciation: say-pah-po-see-bluh
Meaning: This is not working. I can’t believe
this. This can’t be happening. Also: REALLY
right now? I don’t know why but this is my
favorite French-ism. Call me a nerd/weird
but it’s kind of hilarious. You use this in
situations of protest. Once I was arguing
with a French man about a service issue and
I said “C’est pas possible” and then he was
like, “Ben si, Monsieur. C’est
possible.” (Translation: Actually yes, sir, this
is happening/is real/deal with it). #DEAD.
You might say: UGH the Internet in this cafe
isn’t working AGAIN. C’est pas possible. Or: I
hope you’re planning on changing before
we go to this club, because this, what you’re
wearing right now? C’est pas possible.
8. “Quelle Surprise!”
Pronunciation: Kelle sur preeze!
Meaning: Wow! How nice! What a surprise!
You might say: I didn’t know you were
coming over. Quelle surprise!
9…”Quoi”
Pronunciation: Kwoi.
Meaning: The word itself means “what,” but
when most people use it it means absolutely
nothing. Feel free to toss this bad boy in
wherever you feel like it, especially at the
end of your sentences if you really want to
sound like a Francophile.
You might say: And then I told him that I
couldn’t be with him anymore quoi.
10. “MDR”
Pronunciation: Okay so this one is spelled
online and in text messages, so don’t go
around saying “mdr” at people…though I do
say LOL aloud sometimes.
Meaning: MDR = Mort de rire = LOL = Laugh
out loud.
You might say: Just use MDR in place of LOL.
11. “C’est ouf”
Pronunciation: Say OOOOOOF.
Meaning: The literal inverse of “c’est fou,”
which means “That’s cray cray.”
You might say: (Confronted with strange
situation) C’est ouf, ca!
12. “(gasp) Qu’est-ce que c’est?”
Pronunciation: Khes kuh sey.
Meaning: Don’t be silly! We all know what
this means, as it’s the first thing you learn in
French class. But the real way to usher this
French phrase into English is to use it to add
a splash of drama when you are faced with
something amazing.
You might say: Someone approaches you in
a ridiculously amazing outfit, all you have to
say is “Ooooooooh, qu’est-ce que c’est?”
And then POOF: they know you think it’s
fabulous.
BONUS: “Looké”
Pronunciation: Lewk-ay
Meaning: Serving a look, standing out
through fashion. Like, wow.
You might say: I LOVE the way you look in
those pants, you are sooo looké, ****.
Yaaas. Work.

This 20-year-old woman has been left
fighting for her life in the hospital after a
kangaroo court in India ordered her to be
gang-**** for having an affair with a
youth from another village. The brutal
punishment was allegedly carried out by the
very same ‘court’ which found her guilty in a
village near Suri in west Bengal state, 150
miles from Kolkata.

DailyMail reports that, last Monday afternoon,
a group of tribal men found the woman
sitting with her lover, who is from
Chowhatta village and of a different religion.
They dragged the two of them to a religious
place known as a ‘than’ where a makeshift
court was hastily put together on the orders
of the tribal chieftan. Police said that the
youth was told to pay a fine of £245 and
warned that if he did not pay, men from the
village would ‘have fun with the girl.’
With no money forthcoming, the woman
was allegedly tied to a tree before she was
forced into a shed and **** continuously
until Tuesday morning.

Despite her critical condition and clinging to
life, the female victim managed to tell her
story to The Times of India. She narrated
thus: ‘I had an affair with a man. We were
dragged to a gathering where our
community headman was present. They told
me to pay 50,000 rupees (£490). When I
said I couldn’t, they brutalised me.’
A doctor told the Indian newspaper that the
young woman was alive ‘only because she is
a tough tribal girl. The woman’s distraught
mother said that ‘the crime was committed
by our own people.’
She added: ‘They tortured my daughter and
dumped her home late at night. We were
threatened not to go to police. We tried to
go to Bolpur hospital, but they stopped us.’
The woman’s family were forced to remain
indoors throughout Tuesday, doing their
best to care for their daughter who was
bleeding from severe injuries.

According to the Times of India, the family
managed to slip out late on Wednesday
afternoon and took the woman to a health
centre, where doctors said she should be
taken immediately to the nearest hospital.
But from that hospital she was shifted on to
Suri hospital in a critical condition at night.
‘This is when the crime came to light,’ said
police officer Prashanta Chowdhury. ‘She
was gang **** and the details are yet to be
investigated. The shocking incident is not
the first time that a woman has been
punished for having an affair in the area.
Four years ago a teenage girl was stripped
and forced to walk naked through four
villages, during which hundreds of people
molested her and mocked her. They even
filmed her with mobile phones, which
resulted in police moving into the area and
making arrests.
The girl received a bravery award from
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and today
she lives in a state-run welfare home.

Soft-spoken cleric, Rev. David Inung, is the
general overseer of a growing church, God’s
Foundation, Spirit and Truth Church, located
at Olukosi area of Shasha, a Lagos suburb.
He recently had an experience, which he
said, increased his faith in and dedication to
God, which he earnestly wanted to share
with Nigerians. As he disclosed, the church
had been praying for a bus to help convey
its members from different parts of Lagos
on Sundays. Through the success of its 10th
anniversary held on July 10, 2013, the
church was able to buy one, which was
dedicated on the last Sunday of December,
last year.
As Rev. Inung told Saturday Independent,
the bus was a fairly used one but it was in
excellent condition. As he put it, “The bus
was bought to convey our members,
especially those coming from Orile Iganmu,
where the church first started before it was
moved to Shasha. We had prayed to God for
this bus and the Lord did it. But we were yet
to engage a driver for the bus. So, one of
our members used to drive it on Sundays to
pick up members and do other sundry
assignments for the church.”
Rev. Inung stated that the brother
complained that the bus had a hard start, so
they planned to take it to carburettor
specialist in Hajj Cap area in Akowonjo. They
set out to do this on Wednesday January 8.
As the brother cleaned the vehicle where it
was parked at the compound of another
pastor, Rev. Samuel Olutoye, general
overseer, Word of Eternal Life and Revival
Ministries, in preparation for the visit to the
carburettor specialist, he attempted to start
the vehicle, but there was a spark that
ignited a fire, which engulfed the vehicle.
This happened as Rev. Inung was greeting
Rev. Olutoye in his apartment. They were
attracted by the shout of “Fire, Fire” by the
brother and other people in the area, who
immediately gathered to combat the fire,
using water mixed with detergent. As the
fire raged, Pastor Inung said he was
shouting “My Bible, My Bible.” He said he had
dropped the Bible on the passenger’s seat
before going up to greet Rev. Olutoye. By the
time the fire was brought under control, the
bus had been completely burnt.
Hear him: “When we heard the shout of
‘Fire, Fire’, Rev. Olutoye and I ran down. We
saw the bus on fire. Rev. Olutoye’s wife and
children battled to contain the fire with
water and detergent. My concern, which I
voiced out openly, was that the fire would
not go out of hand to engulf Rev. Olutoye’s
house. My second concern was my Bible,
which I left in the bus.
“I and Rev. Olutoye watched helplessly as
fire consumed the vehicle. I kept saying; ‘If
my Bible was not in the bus.’ It was my main
ministerial Bible although I have other
Bibles. I have used it for over five years and I
like it so much. So, it pained me that the
Bible would be burnt in the bus.
“About 40 minutes later, the fire was
stopped but the vehicle was completely
burnt. After I had given up hope on the
Bible, some people who were still around
the burnt vehicle started shouting. They ran
towards me in jubilation, with something in
their hands. Behold, it was my Bible,
retrieved unburnt. As I grabbed the Bible, I
saw that it was untouched by fire, except a
little part of the back cover.
“The mystery is that the complete books of
the Bible were unharmed by the raging fire.
I did not know what to say. The vehicle, an
18-seater Kia bus, was valued at about N1
million. At first, I was dumbfounded. I asked
myself: Why should the church bus, God’s
property and my Bible, which is God’s word,
be destroyed like that? Suddenly, I found out
that my Bible was not destroyed.
“This shows that God is real and the word
of God is God. By this miracle, my faith in
God has become stronger than ever despite
the destruction and the testimony of the bus
that had been dashed. Our members at Orile
Iganmu had been so committed, hence I
prayed seriously for the bus. They love God
without compromise and with their children
they leave their homes early on Sundays and
get to church even before those in Shasha
where the church is located.
“People may wonder why this type of thing
should happen at the beginning of the year.
Our theme for the year is taken from Psalm
102:13: ‘The Lord will arise and have mercy
on us for the set time to favour us has
come’. Incidentally, this misfortune of losing
the only bus we have believed God for years,
and the prayer was answered last year.
“It has happened to prove one thing; that
the bus burnt completely and the Bible was
untouched was enough testimony for me.
God has taken my faith to another level. The
Lord who gave us that bus will give us
another. The incident has proved a tangible
miracle. God is real. Jesus is alive. Everything
can be destroyed but God’s word cannot be
destroyed. I thank God for the lesson of this
miracle, which has taken my faith higher.”

•Victim loses two legs after surgical
operations             •Friend’s fate hangs in
the balance
“Iam in pains, please help me. Don’t let me
die, please save me.” This was the agonizing
cry of Afeez Kareem, one of the victims of a
live electricity wire incident that occurred
along Igando/ Ikotun road in Alimosho Local
Government Area of Lagos State recently.
Afeez, a mechanic, was driving in the
company of his friend, Prince Onyekachi,
when a live electricity wire fell on their
vehicle. In the course of trying to
escape from the impending danger, they
stepped on the live wire and were severely
burnt. Afeez was burnt from the navel down
to his two legs, while Prince’s right leg and
his manhood were affected in the accident.
34-year old Prince is also a mechanic. He
went to visit Afeez in his workshop when
the incident occurred.
The two friends were immediately rushed to
Igando General Hospital, from where they
were referred to the Lagos State University
Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja.
Seeing their condition, the doctors quickly
moved them to Gbagada General Hospital for
intensive care.
Afeez has had the affected two legs cut off
after undergoing two successive operations.
Unfortunately, despite the amputation, his
plight has not abated. He is billed to
undergo another round of surgical
operations. On the other hand, Prince’s fate
is still hanging in the balance. The affected
leg and the manhood
are presently wrapped in bandage and
plasters, waiting for final decisions by the
doctors.
Lying on his hospital bed, Afeez gave details
of how the incident occurred. “I was driving
out with my friend who came to visit me
when the incident happened. It occurred in
the afternoon along Church bus stop on
Igando/Ikotun road, not far from our
workshop.
Rain was falling seriously on that day. “As
we were going, I wanted to make a Uturn
when the live wire fell and dropped on our
vehicle. We quickly tried to escape from the
car, but unfortunately, I stepped on the
live wire and it began to burn my body from
the leg up to my navel. It was a man
opposite the scene of the incident that
called PHCN office to switch off power
supply in the area. It was after that was
done that people were able to come to our
rescue. We were immediately rushed to
Igando General Hospital. They referred us to
Lagos State University Teaching Hospital
(LASUTH) Ikeja almost immediately. When we
got to LASUTH, arrangement was made to
bring us down to this place.
“As I am talking to you now, I am in deep
pains, my lap and buttock is full of wounds. I
cannot sleep nor turn my body. I have been
lying in one position. I am fed while lying
down. I have gone through two
operations already. But they said I would still
have to go through another set of
operations. My pain is aggravated by the fact
that my family members have nowhere to
raise money to foot the bills anymore. They
have sold everything we have and have
borrowed money everywhere to pay part of
the existing bills. I don’t even know how my
children are faring right now.
“I want to appeal to Nigerians to come to
my aid. The operation ought to have been
done, but there is no money anywhere to
pay for it. My fears are that the situation may
be getting worse every day if the operation
is not done on time. Already, I have incurred
a bill of about N300,000 since I was
admitted here. I need urgent help to come
out of these excruciating pains. Nigerians,
please save me. Help me to come out of
these pains.”
The sister, Mrs. Odunayo Adelaja said the
family has so far spent over a million naira
on his treatment and it appears they have
just started.
“We have spent N1million so far on his
treatment. We have sold some valuables that
we have and have borrowed money from
everywhere possible, yet it appears as if we
have not done anything. One of the medical
personnel cleaning him up told me that the
bones around his buttock were coming to
the open. She advised that we have to do all
we can to get money as soon as possible for
the operations to be carried out so that the
problem does not assume a worse
dimension.
“I agree with her, but where would I get the
money? Our parents are old and have
nowhere to raise money. The onus of taking
care of him has been on us (the siblings).
We have spent all we have and have
seriously become indebted to many people.
Before I left home this morning, some of the
people that lent us money came to ask for
their money. I have almost become a fugitive
because the embarrassment is too much,”
she said.
Prince, a chronic stammerer was unable to
speak. His father, Mr. Innocent Onyekachi,
looked extremely ruffled when our reporters
met him. The 66-year old father said Prince’s
plight has brought untold sorrow to his life.
“My son’s condition has brought a lot of
sorrow to my life. His fate is still hanging in
the balance. Some of the doctors said there
is no need to cut the leg, while others said it
should be cut. The last statement was
that the leg would be cut. We have paid for
it and waiting for them to cut it. He was
making use of pipe to urinate before now
because the incident affected his manhood.
They have removed the pipe and he could
use wheel chair to go and urinate now.
“We have spent close to a million naira on
his treatment so far. We have a bill of over
N200, 000 in the hospital that we have not
paid. I have borrowed money
everywhere and do not even know the next
place to go and borrow money. Many people
are even reluctant to borrow me money
because they believe I don’t have the
capability of repaying it. I am a just a local
dry cleaner. I go from house to house to
wash cloth for people, so you can imagine
what could be my income. I don’t have any
money. Apart from borrowing, friends and
church members have also been assisting
me. I want to appeal to kind-hearted
Nigerians and government in particular to
come and help us,” he pleaded.
One of Afeez’s colleagues in the workshop,
Mr. Sunday Afolabi, said the landlord
association in the area has also gone
around to beg for money to assist him.
He said: “ What happened to Afeez and his
friend was pathetic. It is by the grace of God
that he is still alive today. We were together
on that fateful day when the incident
occurred. I was where I went to eat
when some of our colleagues came to
inform me that Afeez was being
electrocuted. When I got to the place, I saw
him and his friend held on a spot beside the
car and helplessly being burnt by the live
wire. Nobody could go close
to them that very moment. We all stood afar
and watched the whole thing happen. It
was like a dream to me. We were able to
rescue them when PHCN cut power supply.
“We, his colleagues have been contributing
money among ourselves from time to time
to assist him. Even the landlord association
in the area has gone around seeking
financial help for him and his friend.
In spite of all these efforts, solution is not
yet in sight. The bills are not what the family
can foot alone. The family urgently needs
assistance from both the government and
kind hearted Nigerians to deliver these guys
from this problem.” Mr. John Oga, a
resident of the area, blamed PHCN for the
victims’ plight. He said: “The PHCN is largely
responsible for this calamity that befell Afeez
and his friend.
This disaster would not have occurred if
they have been maintaining the facilities
very well. It is every unfortunatethat they
never bothered to support the family
financially after the incident that was caused
by their facility. The only thing they did was
to come and fix the wire. The Federal
Government should come in here and assist
the family because it was their agency that
caused this problem for the victims.
“The incident has dashed their promising
future because there is no possibility that
they can engage in any meaning venture to
make both ends meet even after they would
have been discharged from the hospital.
They should be adequately taken care of and
compensated. All the money that the families
have spent should be refunded by the
government.
The company that bought PHCN should also
do something because they bought the
liability of the company along with the
assets. If possible, they should be flown
abroad for better medical attention. Efforts
should be made by the new companies that
bought the PHCN to put all the facilities and
wires in good shape to avert a
reoccurrence of this kind of distasteful
incident. ”

Latest Gists In Town / Google apologizes after online services stumble
« on: January 25, 2014, 04:42:32 pm »
Google apologized Friday after the Internet
giant’s widely used free email and an array
of other services were disrupted by
apparent software woes.
“Earlier today (Friday), most Google users
who use logged-in services like Gmail,
Google+, Calendar and Documents found
they were unable to access those services
for approximately 25 minutes,” Google
engineering vice president Ben Treynor said
in a blog post.
“For about 10 percent of users, the problem
persisted for as much as 30 minutes
longer.”
Google did not disclose the full extent of the
Gmail glitch but the brief outage was
believed to have affected millions of people,
including those using the service at work.
Complaints were posted online from Europe,
Canada, the United States and elsewhere.
An online Google Apps tracking dashboard,
which indicated that a dozen services —
including Gmail and its social network
Google+ — had experienced problems.
“Whether the effect was brief or lasted the
better part of an hour, please accept our
apologies-we strive to make all of Google’s
services available and fast for you, all the
time, and we missed the mark today,”
Treynor said.
“The issue has been resolved, and we’re
now focused on correcting the bug that
caused the outage, as well as putting more
checks and monitors in place to ensure that
this kind of problem doesn’t happen again.”
Rival Yahoo, whose own Web-based email
service experienced a massive outage in
December, was quick to join a chorus on
Twitter spreading word of the Gmail issue.
Yahoo even tweeted a screen capture of a
Google message apologizing for the
problem.

Health and Welfare / Top 10 Hair Care Tips
« on: January 25, 2014, 04:38:56 pm »
It is every girl’s dream to have gorgeous,
healthy hair (Unless you are the coolest and
you want to go bald) How do you
counteract the effects of sunlight, pollution,
bad lifestyle and more to achieve healthy
hair? Read on to know how-
10- Beware of the Sun
sun
Living in India, we bear the full brunt of
summer heat. This extremely hot season can
also be extremely damaging for your hair.
The scorching sunlight and harmful rays
from the sun can turn your hair rough, dry
and damaged looking. To prevent such a
thing from happening, avoid going out
when the sun is at its peak during
afternoon hours (also very good for the rest
of your body’s health). If, however, you must
go out, make sure that you keep your head
covered. Use an umbrella or wear a scarf,
even if going out for a short while. Applying
a serum or a leave-in onto your hair can go
a long way in protecting it from heat
damage, as they act like sunscreens for your
hair.
9- Choose your shampoo carefully
shampoo
The shampoo and conditioner that you use
on your hair will determine how healthy it
looks and feels. If you have rough and dry
hair, opt for cream based conditioners and
shampoos. If, however, you have oily hair,
water based products will do you good. You
may need to experiment with different
shampoos before you find a product and a
brand that suits your hair type. There are so
many products available in the market today
that finding a good one won’t be much of a
challenge. Keep in mind factors like how
frizzy your hair can get and how often do
you need to wash it, before you pick a
shampoo off the shelf. If you wash your hair
a lot, go for a mild shampoo as too much
washing can also be damaging.
8- Dandruff
dandruff
Dandruff is a very common problem,
especially during winters. It refers to the
flaking white dead skin of the scalp. It is a
scalp disorder that affects almost half the
population worldwide. If you are one of the
few lucky ones who does not suffer from
dandruff, skip this point. If you do suffer
from dandruff, read this list and go treat
your hair to some dandruff-removing
techniques. If you have dandruff, don’t just
ignore it. Use any of the special dandruff-
removing shampoos and conditioners that
are widely available in the market today. If
that doesn’t work, you may need to go in for
stronger solutions like nizoral antifungals.
Traditional methods of curing dandruff
include the use of Neem (a strong anti-
fungal) egg yolk and even black pepper (an
Indian Ayurvedic remedy)
7- Trim Your Hair
trim
Trim your hair regularly to ensure good
growth and get rid of split ends. It is
strongly recommended that you get your
hair trimmed at least once in six months to
keep it healthy. Putting off trimming for too
long will cause split ends and damaged hair
ends. Many people who want to grow their
hair longer avoid trimming it for the fear
that it will shorten the length of their hair.
That is, however, untrue. Regular trimming
of hair actually stimulates hair growth
(opinion is divided on this, but traditional
wisdom agrees that it does) If you don’t
trim your hair, the split ends will travel up
the length and damage your hair further. So
get it trimmed as often as needed to have
long and healthy hair.
6- Water Temperature
washing
The temperature of the water that you use
to wash your hair with can determine how
good your hair quality is. Always wash your
hair with lukewarm water. Extreme
temperatures as in too hot or too cold water
can damage your hair follicles, so always use
water at an optimum temperature. Especially
avoid the use of extremely hot water, even
during winters, as that can be very
damaging for your hair. Many people
recommend giving hair a final rinse with
tea-water to give it shine and gloss.
5- Go Easy With the Heat Treatment
hairstraightening
Who amongst us has never been lured by
the promise of gorgeous curls or silky
straight hair? Who amongst us has never
put a heated rod on our hair in an attempt
to make it more manageable? A great
majority of us, I’m sure, have done exactly
that. However, heat treatments like hair
straighteners and curlers cause more harm
than good. The short-term results of great
looking, swishy hair may be realized, but the
long-term effects can be devastating. Heat
can be very harmful for your hair, as
mentioned earlier as well. The cuticle layer is
damaged by heat, which also causes hair to
become brittle and fall. Do not straighten
your hair every day, as that will make it
rough and day. Do so only in moderation,
before special events perhaps? Moreover,
Never apply heat onto your hair when it is
wet. Wait for it to dry before you straighten
or curl it. Use good quality straightners with
ceramic plates to avoid excessive damage.
4- Comb Your Hair
haircombing
Of course we all comb our hair, but how
often should we do it? Experts disagree
with the advice that every mother gives to
her daughter- ‘Brush your hair a hunder
times before you sleep.’ They say that so
much brushing could lead to split ends. That,
however, does not mean that you can forgo
combing completely. Comb your hair every
night before sleeping and every morning
before you tie it up. Doing that will make
your hair look smoother and detangle it.
After washing your hair, comb it with a
wide-toothed comb. Never use a fine comb
on wet hair. A wide toothed comb,
preferable a wooden one, will detangle wet
hair and make it easier to manage once it
dries. Avoid using a brush on wet hair
because that will lead to more breakage.
3- Natural Remedies
natural
Sometimes, it pays to go easy on the
synthetic products available in the market
and rely on traditional remedies that are
available in nature. There are many natural
ingredients that you can use on your hair to
make it healthier and better. Egg yolk is one
of these. It acts like a natural conditioner.
Aloe vera gel is also used. Many homemade
hair masks are extremely beneficial for your
hair. Yoghurt mixed with honey is excellent
for dry hair. People with graying hair use
henna on it, although henna on dry hair can
make it drier. Vinegar mixed with warm
water or the water in which rice has been
soaked should be used to rinse hair after
washing it. There are many other ways in
which you can take care of your hair using
natural ingredients, so try them and see the
difference in just a few days.
2- Coloured Hair
coloured
Coloured hair requires even more care and
protection than virgin hair. If you are
planning on colouring your hair, make sure
you use only quality products. Get your
colouring or streaking done from a reputed
parlour to avoid damage later on. The right
application technique will ascertain that
your hair looks good. Once you have
coloured your hair, take care that you don’t
wash it within the next forty eight hours.
Don’t bleach your hair, as that makes it look
dry. Instead, use good quality hair dyes if
you must streak it. There are many products
in the market that are designed especially
for coloured hair, so invest in such hair
products.
1- Oil Your Hair
hair oil
Oiling your hair is of utmost importance if
you want soft, silky and healthy hair. It is the
primary source of nourishment for hair. The
market is flooded with hair oils that promise
good results in a short time (Remember One
hour champi?) Grandma was right when
she urged you to oil your hair every Sunday.
Hair oiling is especially necessary for
parched, dry hair. Massage your hair with
warm oil and let it stay overnight. The
massage also increases blood circulation in
the scalp and increases hair growth.
Nowadays, there are even shampoos that
promise the goodness of oil inside them. Try
those if you are too busy to oil your hair
regularly.

Health and Welfare / 10 Ways to Invest in Yourself
« on: January 24, 2014, 09:51:54 pm »
When was the last time I did something I
loved? What have I done to better myself
in the past month? To whom do I listen?
You will better understand how your energy
is consumed based on your answers. If you
feel you deserve more self-care, put into
practice the following 10 ways to invest in
your own welfare and watch your inherent
strength resurface:
Discover your true needs. No two people
have the exact same needs. Establish what's
most important for you to gain, have, and
keep in your life, e.g., what you truly need as
opposed to what you simply want.
Raise your self-worth. Even if you think you
already possess a healthy dose of self-
esteem, work to improve your opinion of
yourself. This calls for a remorseless disposal
of fears and perceived insecurities as well as
the healing of old wounds once and for all.
Never apologize for who you are. Be an
unapologetic bearer of your best and worst
traits, the totality of your being. What may
seem like a personal defect to you may be
an endearing trait to someone else. You are
perfect and flawed in a unique combination
that can never be replicated, and this fact
should be embraced.
Never go against your intuition. Your
intuition knows more than you think. Learn
to trust your inner voice without hesitation;
reason may tell you one thing, but your
instinct tells you the right thing, always.
Create a bigger version of yourself. Don't
settle on a self-imposed plateau; always aim
a bit higher than before. Visualize your ideal
life -- regardless of how unattainable it may
seem now -- and act to manifest it one
element at a time.
Take impeccable care of yourself. If you
don't practice the art of self-care, who will
do it for you? Adopt healthy habits and
grow stronger each day in mental,
emotional, and physical ways. Ensure that
the situations in which you choose to
become involved are helpful and not
harmful.
Set an example. Setting an example for
others means that you act with integrity
under all circumstances, which is a sign of
careful attention to your being. When you
set an example, you show those around you
that you've invested in yourself time and
time again to reach a level of excellence.
Multiply your riches. There exists greater
richness in knowledge, wisdom,
compassion, and tenacity than in all the
money in the world. These are realizations
unmatched by any amount of wealth which
allow you to navigate through inevitable
challenges with ease. Those who know,
grow.
Do what you love. Oftentimes it is the
simplest things that deliver the most
profound joy, yet we barely find time for
these precious activities. Don't postpone
your simple pleasures, whether you like to
read or sing or hike. Perform actions
grounded in a deep seat of love every day.
Weigh your options. Beware of making the
same mistakes due to habit or influence.
Don't be afraid to go within and weigh your
options before making decisions.
Remember that you have the right to pick
the people and things you want in your life
-- they should not pick you.
The beauty of sacrifice is that you will not
always be able to put yourself first. But by
raising your awareness of what you
deserve, you can foster a healthy balance
between how much you do for others and
how much you do for yourself. You are your
single greatest investment, and to put
energy into your well-being is to ensure the
equal well-being of those who depend on
you.

Health and Welfare / 7 Things Not To Do When You're Sleep Deprived
« on: January 24, 2014, 09:45:26 pm »
You know getting too little sleep makes you
tired and crabby and hungry and forgetful.
But other than waking up on the wrong
side of the proverbial bed, how bad is the
occasional sleep-deprived day, really?
It turns out just a little bit of extra sleep
goes a long way in protecting your health,
boosting your memory and keeping you
safe from potentially-fatal events like heart
attacks and car accidents.
Just one night of sleep deprivation can also
set you up for a number of everyday
missteps we'd all rather avoid. Here are a
few of those things you shouldn't do when
you haven't had enough sleep.
Drive
drowsy driving
You wouldn't get behind the wheel after
having a few drinks, but you also shouldn't
get behind the wheel without your 40
winks. In a 2012 study, researchers found
that drunk and sleepy drivers are both at
least twice as likely to be responsible for an
accident, Reuters reported. "We know from
experimental studies that just four hours of
sleep loss will produce as much impairment
as a six pack," Christopher Drake, an
associate scientist at the Henry Ford Hospital
Sleep Disorders and Research Center in
Detroit, told Reuters.
But it's not just sleepy car drivers who
should hand over the keys. Pilots, train
operators and truck drivers all report errors
on the job due to sleepiness, including "near
misses," according to the National Sleep
Foundation.
Make Important Decisions There's a
biological reason that something seems like
a good idea when you're tired, when it
might not actually be the best bet. In a 2011
study, researchers observed increased brain
activity in areas that assess positive
outcomes
after sleep deprivation. There was also
decreased activity in brain areas that assess
negative outcomes. Essentially, then,
skimping on sleep skews our decision-
making powers toward the optimistic, and
may therefore sway you toward signing the
lease or taking the job without realistically
weighing the pros and cons. The authors
suggested changes in levels of the
neurotransmitter dopamine
may play a role, the LA Times reported.
Go Grocery Shopping
grocery shopping
You already know you shouldn't fill up your
cart when you're hungry, but if you're
sleepy to boot, you're in for some unwise
choices: A 2013 study found that sleep-
deprived shoppers purchased more and
higher-calorie food
than they would have during a well-rested
trip to the supermarket. "We hypothesized
that sleep deprivation's impact on hunger
and decision making would make for the
'perfect storm' with regard to shopping and
food purchasing
-- leaving individuals hungrier and less
capable of employing self-control and
higher-level decision-making processes to
avoid making impulsive, calorie-driven
purchases," author Colin Chapman, MSc, of
Uppsala University, said in a statement. The
men in the study loaded up their carts with
9 percent more calories and 18 percent
more grams of food after a night of little
sleep. "Our finding provides a strong
rationale for suggesting that patients with
concerns regarding caloric intake and
weight gain maintain a healthy, normal
sleep schedule," Chapman said.
Or Online Shopping, For That Matter If
decision making is skewed and
impulsiveness amplified, we think it's safe to
say that shopping decisions beyond
groceries may also be affected. With more
difficulty in the logical reasoning
department and impaired judgement, the
day after a night of fitful sleep isn't the day
to decide you're going to buy that designer
bag.
Grab An Energy Drink
energy drinks
Yes, you're tired, but a brisk walk, a quick
workout or a nap, if you can swing it, is a
much wiser choice than the nearest caffeine
jolt, considering the copious sugar and
mysterious compounds in many popular
energy drink brands. Plus, many cans
contain surprisingly little actual caffeine,
especially compared to a strong cup of
coffee (not to mention real coffee boasts
actual health benefits).
Brag About It Perhaps nothing fosters an
unhealthier sleep climate than participating
in what HuffPost president and editor-in-
chief Arianna Huffington dubbed "sleep
deprivation one-upmanship" in a 2010 TED
Talk. In reality, a very select few of us are
actual short sleepers
, meaning we really can get by on just a few
hours each night. The rest of us should help
change the conversation about sleep by
being more aware of the messages we
send.
Pick A Fight
emotions sleep
The morning after a night of tossing and
turning is not the time to bring up that
serious talk you've been meaning to have
with your bed partner. That's because
you're likely to be highly emotional when
you're lacking in sleep -- and not in a good
way. "It's almost as though, without sleep,
the brain had reverted back to more
primitive patterns of activity, in that it was
unable to put emotional experiences into
context and produce controlled, appropriate
responses," Matthew Walker, senior author
of a 2007 study on the subject, said in a
statement. The research found that sleep-
deprived brains were 60 percent more
reactive
to negative and disturbing images, USA
Today reported.

Stephen Keshi, Head Coach of Super
Eagles, clocked 52 yesterday, Thursday,
January 23. However, he has pledged that
he would not celebrate until the team
achieves success at the ongoing African
Nations Championship in South Africa.
The Birthday party can wait, he said, as the
home-based Eagles prepare to take on
Morocco tomorrow for a place in the last
four of the African Nations Championship
(CHAN).
"As a matter of fact, we have suspended any
form of celebration till we achieve what we
came here to do in South Africa," the former
Anderlecht of Belgium and Strasbourg of
France skipper said.
However, Mr. Keshi seemed very pleased
when management of Green Court Hotel
congratulated him with birthday balloons
and cakes. The footballers also sang the
'Happy Birthday To You' song for him.
"All these for me, I'm surprised, but very
grateful", the coach said as he admired the
birthday balloons in the dining hall.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President,
Aminu Maigari, took his fatherly role a step
higher when he was one of the first to wish
Keshi a happy 52nd birthday via a phone call
early yesterday.
After him was the chairman of the NFF
technical sub-committee, Chris Green.
In his message, Maigari said Keshi's birthday
was another opportunity for him to
demonstrate his coaching and leadership
credentials by winning the ongoing CHAN in
South Africa.
"On our part in the NFF, I can assure you
that support will not be lacking despite the
huge challenge of funding football," he said.
"We congratulate you on the occasion of
your birthday and while wishing you many
happy returns we pray that you continue to
bring Nigeria joy through excellent coaching
of the national team with the immediate
task being victory at the ongoing CHAN
tourney."
The team continued training yesterday
evening at the Green Point training ground
in Cape Town in preparation for Saturday's
quarterfinal clash with the Atlas Lions of
Morocco.
