Towards evening, the sun was setting
beyond the mountains of Carrara and the
world was surprised by the sudden
departure of the sun and the sudden
darkness. The city of Florence was in gloom
though the brown hills around were
glowing with the last sun rays. A green
beam of sunlight came under the arches of
the bridge of Ponte Vecchio from the west
and the direction of the beam of light was
against the current of the river Arno. At this
point, should anyone look up from a terrace,
one could see something flying between
light and darkness as if these things were
stitching the shadows together with spools
of thread. The bats were flying from one
patch of darkness to another through a
lighted part. As the sun went down more,
the shadows came closer to each other as if
the bats were stitching them together.
The bats were flying in a circle, and then
they suddenly swooped to the river. They
suddenly changed their orbits into a
parabola and turned a somersault and
dipped to the water. At first, the narrator
mistook the bats for swallows, though he
wondered as to why they were flying so
late. Yet he could not be sure if they were
swallows. The bats flew at times in a loop-
like orbit though it was not a pure loop.
They made a sudden movement of the body.
They twittered and made the air shudder as
it was. The bats looked like gloves thrown
up at the light and falling back.
The manner of flight only proved to the
narrator that the flying things were not
swallows. He could now realize that the
swallows had gone away and the bats had
come just like the change of guard. As soon
as he realized that they were bats, he
experienced a very uneasy sensation in his
scalp. He felt that the bats were flying madly.
He remembered how disgusting the bats
looked when they sleep hanging upside
down from branches of trees or inside
caves. They grin as if they are smiling in
mockery and contempt. He did not look
upon them as anything good though they
are regarded in China as a symbol of
happiness.

And falling back.
Never swallows!
Bats!
The swallows are gone.
At a wavering instant the swallows gave
way to bats
By the Ponte Vecchio ...
Changing guard.
Bats, and an uneasy creeping in one's scalp
As the bats swoop overhead!
Flying madly.
Pipistrello!
Black piper on an infinitesimal pipe.
Little lumps that fly in air and have voices
indefinite, wildly vindictive;
Wings like bits of umbrella.
Bats!
Creatures that hang themselves up like an
old rag, to sleep;
And disgustingly upside down.
Hanging upside down like rows of
disgusting old rags
And grinning in their sleep.
Bats!
In China the bat is symbol for happiness.

To His Coy Mistress Summary
"To His Coy Mistress" is divided into three
stanzas or poetic paragraphs. It’s spoken by
a nameless man, who doesn’t reveal any
physical or biographical details about
himself, to a nameless woman, who is also
biography-less.
During the first stanza, the speaker tells the
mistress that if they had more time and
space, her "coyness" (see our discussion on
the word "coy" in "What’s Up With the Title?"
wouldn’t be a "crime." He extends this
discussion by describing how much he
would compliment her and admire her, if
only there was time. He would focus on
"each part" of her body until he got to the
heart (and "heart," here, is both a metaphor
for sex, and a metaphor for love).
In the second stanza he says, "BUT," we
don’t have the time, we are about to die! He
tells her that life is short, but death is
forever. In a shocking moment, he warns
her that, when she’s in the coffin, worms
will try to take her "virginity" if she doesn’t
have sex with him before they die. If she
refuses to have sex with him, there will be
repercussions for him, too. All his intimate
desire will burn up, "ashes" for all time.
In the third stanza he says, "NOW," I’ve told
you what will happen when you die, so let’s
have sex while we’re still young. Hey, look at
those "birds of prey" mating. That’s how we
should do it – but, before that, let’s have us a
little wine and time (cheese is for sissies).
Then, he wants to play a game – the turn
ourselves into a "ball" game. (Hmmm.) He
suggests, furthermore, that they release all
their pent up frustrations into the sex act,
and, in this way, be free.
In the final couplet, he calms down a little.
He says that having sex can’t make the "sun"
stop moving. In Marvell’s time, the
movement of the sun around the earth (we
now believe the earth rotates around the
sun) is thought to create time. Anyway, he
says, we can’t make time stop, but we can
change places with it. Whenever we have
sex, we pursue time, instead of time
pursuing us. This fellow has some confusing
ideas about sex and time. Come to think of
it, we probably do, too. "To His Coy Mistress"
offers us a chance to explore some of those
confusing thoughts.

Give me the minstrel's seat that i may sit

David Rubadiri (Malawian poet)
(A group of friends requested me to present
some African poem and this was my pick,
and my thoughts regarding the same)
From the west

About the poet: David Rubadiri was born in
1930. He studied literature
inMakerereUniversit yand later on in the
University of Bristol where he graduated
with an M.A. in English literature. In 1964, he
becameMalawi’s first ambassador to the
United Statesand the United Nations.
The poem describes a typical African
thunderstorm, with all its intensity. In
African society, rain is a blessing; everything
loves the approach of rain, not just children.
It is good for the crops and the animals, as it
increases the harvest. However, when we
read this poem, we don’t get the feeling that
the author is happy; he concentrates on
telling us about the damage that the rain
and wind do. For example a plague of
locusts is never a good thing, at least for the
crops. It calls attention because the poet
uses this simile while referring to the wind
that brings rain, a good thing.
It is possible to interpret the poem as the
effect of colonial domination on the native
land. The time that the poet has lived- his
country got independent in the early 1960’s-
can be convincing. At least he was familiar
with that part of the history of his country. It
also alludes to domination by such words as
“trees bend to let the wind pass”, “clouds
ride stately on the back of the wind”. The
tattered flags have a nationalistic
connotation.
The interpretation provided could be
making a mountain out of a mole- hill but
also, there can be more than meets the eye.
That is why it is important to know as much
as possible about the historical context in
which the poet lived. Rubadiri fell out with
his president a year after his appointment
as ambassador. It would be interesting to
find out when he actually wrote the poem
and what he did afterwards, a challenge I
launch out to you!

It was uncontrollable emotions and tears as
one of the victims of Port Harcourt
Immigration stampede Mr. Kalu Sunday
Okezie, was buried yesterday in his home
town, Okon-Aku Community in Ohafia Local
Government of Abia State.
Sunday, 30, was among the five applicants
that died during the nationwide Nigeria
Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment
exercise in Elekahia Stadium, Port Harcourt
Rivers State capital.
Five victims were confirmed death in Port
Harcourt during the stampede. They include
Grace Nwokaku Amah 28 years, from Ubima
Community in Ikwerre Local Government
Area of Rivers State, Kalu Sunday Okezie, 30
years from Okon-aku Community in Ohafia,
Brown Darlington, 25 years from Opobo-
Nkoro Local Government of Rivers State and
two others whose names are yet to be
identify by the this reporter.
The remains of late Sunday who was the last
son of the family of three left Port Harcourt,
Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital
(BMSH) by 6am and was received by his
parent, relatives youths of Okon-Aku
Community in Ohafia by 12pm.
The bereaved parents, Mr& Mrs Okezie Kalu
who were weeping when The Nation visited
their family house during the funeral of their
sonsaid they are highly disappointed with
the organizers of the shoddy Immigration
recruitment.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Kalu,
the father of the decease, a security guard
with Abia State Primary School Board
accused the organisers of the failed
Immigration recruitment of playing politics
with human life, which he noted made them
to have no regard for human life.
The 55-year- old Kalu said the issue could
have been a double tragedy in his family as
his wife collapsed and was hospitalized
after hearing the news of the death of his
son. He added that since them his wife is yet
to recover from the shock
Mr. Kalu said: “God knows why it happened
this way, but I am not happy with those
who organised the recruitment; their
attitude shows that they don’t have regard
for human life. Instead of me to enjoy the
fruit of my labour, what I saw was dead
body; those who organize the recruitment
are wicked and heartless.
“The painful part of the death of my son is
that I suffered as security man to train him
from primary school to University level and
now that I am anxiously waiting the day I
will eat the fruit of my labour everything has
turned upside down.”
He said it is unfortunate that he buried his
son instead of the other way round, but
noted that he has lost hope in anything that
has to do with Federal government, “ Don’t
believe the Federal government anymore
even as they said they will compensate us
with job, it is just a dream I don’t believe
them.
Mother of the deceased, Mrs. Justina
Okezie Kalu said her late son visited her on
the night before the ill recruitment to inform
her about the exercise.
“He came to me that Friday night in Port
Harcourt before the recruitment to inform
about it. I was surprise when I got message
that my own son was among those who
died, and it was the only thing I could
remember, because I was unconscious for
days.
Some of the chiefs and elders of the
community who spoke to our reporters
expressed dissatisfaction with the setting
up of new committee for immigration
recruitment when those who died on the
last recruitment exercise are still fresh in the
memory of the bereaved families.
Chief Joseph Madueme said: “Nobody is
stopping the Federal government from
setting up a new committee to organise a
fresh recruitment. But all my people are
saying is that it is bad to do that now when
those who died on the last recruitment
exercise are yet to be buried.
Chief Lucky Chukwuma another elderly man
in the community said, “The Federal
government is not serious, look we don’t
expect any recruitment now untill after one
year. This is to respect those applicants who
sacrifice their lives because of this job. Any
further recruitment this moment is
tantamount to betrayal.
However, the late Sunday studied Micro
Biology at the Ebonyi State University and
concluded his one year compulsory National
Youth Service Scheme in Oyo State in 2010.

Struggling smartphone maker BlackBerry
saw its quarterly revenues fall below $1bn
(£601m) for the first time in seven years in
the three months to March, recording its
ninth successive quarter of operating losses
and ending its fiscal year with net losses of $
5.8bn.
The company recorded revenue on sales of
just 1.3m of its new BB10 phones, though it
sold 3.4m of its older BB7 phones as
customers stuck to the older model that
drove it to success. Operating losses were $
537m, and net losses $423m.
The company's shares moved up 4% in pre-
market trading as the losses were smaller
than had been expected, and revenue in the
US slightly higher than analysts forecast.
John Chen, recruited in November as chief
executive to try to turn the company around,
said he was "very pleased" with progress
and that "we have significantly streamlined
operations, allowing us to reach our
expense reduction target one quarter ahead
of schedule."
He also told Reuters that the company was
working on high-end keyboard-based
smartphones to appeal to "keyboard
aficionados" in the next 18 months.
He is also considering ways to generate
more value from the BlackBerry Messenger
(BBM) software, presently available for free
on BlackBerry, Apple and Android devices.
The purchase by Facebook of messaging
app WhatsApp for $19bn has piqued
interest in the potential of BBM – though the
chief of that division left BlackBerry recently,
and its software chief is heading to Apple.
Despite a cash outflow of $553m during the
quarter, Chen said that the company was on
a "sound financial footing", with $2.7bn of
cash and equivalents.
Chen has laid off staff, sold offices and land,
and outsourced the manufacture of handset
as part of a retrenchment from the
consumer market to focus on its strongest
markets among government and business
users. Operating expenses were halved from
the start of the fiscal year, and the number
of phones sitting unsold with retailers –
known as "channel inventory" – reduced by
a third.
BlackBerry has fallen far from its peak at the
end of 2010, when its revenues hit $5.5bn
in a single quarter and it claimed 80m users
for its platform. Its total revenue for the past
four quarters were just $6.8bn. Though it
was one of the first companies to offer a
smartphone, and leant on its powerful email
encryption as a selling point, the rise of
Apple's iPhone and phones running
Google's Android software has seen its
unique selling points eroded.
The company now faces a problem in
interesting buyers in its BB10 platform,
launched in January 2013 by former chief
executive Thorsten Heins but given a frosty
reception by mobile networks and
customers. Many have preferred to stick
with the older BB7, which has outsold the
BB10 models in every quarter since its
release. Most of BlackBerry's losses for 2014
are due to massive writedowns on unsold
BB10 handsets.
Despite a $1bn debt financing ahead of
Chen's appointment, the company is still
losing key customers among corporations.
However BlackBerry was able to tout the US
Department of Defence having cleared BB10
for use on the Pentagon's networks.
BlackBerry's headline revenues are still
highly dependent on its handset sales, but
those have now fallen to a level not seen
since summer 2006, while the quarterly
revenues were the same as in the three-
month period before the launch of Apple's
iPhone. For the past two quarters the
majority of its revenues have come from
services, where it provides its BlackBerry
Enterprise Server software to corporate
customers to handle BlackBerry handsets.
Meanwhile the company's former consumer
strongholds in the US, UK and Asia all
showed signs of erosion.

Two Britons and 10 Nigerians have been
arrested on charges of trying to bribe a
military officer to facilitate oil theft, the
military said on Friday.
Major-General E.J. Atewe, commander of the
mixed military and police Joint Task Force
(JTF) for the oil-producing Niger Delta
region, said two of the bunkerers, both
Nigerian, had gone to an officer to request
clearance to move the crude oil.
They had openly admitted their plan was to
hack into a pipeline and connect a hose that
would siphon crude out of it onto a waiting
boat, and offered him $6,500 to provide a
gunboat to protect them on the way out.
“The suspects were immediately arrested
for attempting to bribe the brigade
commander for economic sabotage,” Atewe
said in a statement, and a follow-up
operation had led to the arrest of two
Britons and another eight Nigerians.
Oil theft by armed gangs is rampant in
Nigeria, with estimates ranging from
100,000 barrels to 250,000 barrels a day
lost to so-called “bunkerers”.

Stories of collusion with the security forces
are common and the sheer scale of oil theft
in Nigeria would not be possible without
systematic collusion by various security
agencies, security sources say.
Loss of output from theft and outages
caused by sabotaging pipelines has cost the
treasury – which relies on oil for about 80
percent of revenues – billions of dollars.
Critics, however, say theft is exaggerated to
cover up embezzlement of oil revenues by
officials in the state oil firm, a charge they
deny.
Oil theft has contributed to the high
likelihood Nigeria will lose its top African
crude oil exporter spot in May, as exports
could fall to their lowest since records
began in 2009.
Production of the Forcados grade has been
hit by underwater pipeline leakage, which
Shell blamed on oil theft, and which led the
operator to declare force majeure on the
grade this week.
Despite widespread evidence of collusion
between Nigerian security forces, the
government has been keen to portray oil

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board
(JAMB), said on Friday that the 2014 Unified
Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
would also be conducted in seven countries
abroad.
Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the registrar, stated this
on Friday while fielding questions from
newsmen at the University of Ilorin.
He said the examination, scheduled for April,
would also take place in Accra (Ghana),
Johannesburg (South Africa), Cameroun,
Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Ivory Coast, London
(UK) and Cotonou (Benin Republic).

He said JAMB was prepared to conduct a
smooth and hitch-free examination in all
accredited centres in the country.
He said about 160 examination centres
were accredited to conduct the electronic-
based examination, pointing out that the
number of centres was increased this year.
“Last year, the board had only fifty-five
centres,” he said.
The Registrar said about 300 examination
centres applied, adding that only 160 were
accredited because they met with the
Board’s requirements.
He said the centres would have steady
power supply with back-up facilities if there
were power out-ages.
On the level of education in the country,
Ojerinde said that polytechnics and colleges
of education offered the best technical
training in the country.
“The federal and state governments must
revamp and reposition the institutions to
meet the demands of the education sector,”
he said.
He urged Nigerians not to abandon the
country for “education tourism abroad”,
adding that the Ghanaian education was not
better than Nigeria’s and advised those
leaving to return.

 Google has announced general availability of the Google APIs Client Library for the Microsoft .NET Framework. What this means for Windows Phone developers is that they can now integrate core Google services into their Windows Phone apps – Google Drive, Google+, Calendar, Translator, YouTube and Blogger, to mention a few. There are at least 50 Google APIs in the library and there’s also a tutorial to get developers started on how to use them.

Zenith Bank of Nigeria Plc has successfully
implemented SmartStream’s Corona TLM
reconciliation solution.
This is expected to help the bank eliminate
manual errors, secure timely completion of
transaction, centralise all reconciliation
process in one single system, focus more on
exceptions management and operational
risk, and attain high processing efficiency.
The process of selecting the solution,
according to ActivEdge Technologies (a
partner in the project) was very rigorous
and had to be done in multiple stages with
some weak vendors pulling out because of
tough operational processing and
transaction types that had to be reconciled
through the system.
With this successful implementation, Zenith
Bank has now joined the league of over
2000 leading banks globally who are users
of Corona TLM reconciliation and exceptions
management solution, it explained.
The solution from SmartStream covers a
complete lifecycle of transaction and is able
to support multiple cycles of matching of
ATM/PoS and other switch based transaction
inreal time ensuring that customers who
have challenges like ATM dispense errors
can have the anomaly immediately
corrected.
Commenting on the project, the Chief
Executive Officer, ActivEdge Technologies
(distributor and local implementation
partners of SmartStream), Mr. George Agu,
observed that at this crucial time when
banks were working with lower margin,
more regulatory pressure and high
complexity, there is high demand for
efficiency in back office operations.
The project manager of Zenith Bank, Mr.
