 Last year, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was in Lagos, where he was hosted by tech companies in the country. During his visit, he donated $24 Million to Andela, a tech company that trains developers. The gesture showed Mark is interested in the Nigerian tech industry, and going by the publication on GADGET NDTV, Facebook is planning to open a “community hub space” in Nigeria next year. The mission of the hub will be to encourage software developers and technology entrepreneurs and also train digital skills in the country. By the plan, the Facebook incubator programme would help develop tech startups in the country and also help train 50,000 Nigerians in digital skills. At the moment, there isn’t detail about the period the programme will take place; the period will be announced in a later day. But unlike the Google digital skills training, which is online, the Facebook digital skills training would be offline. According to Facebook, the training will be offered in cities including Port Harcourt in the South, Calabar in the South East, Kaduna in the North, and Abuja at the center.  National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, has linked the secession agitations agitations in the country to the “chronic failure of government to meet basic aspirations” of the citizens. Tinubu has consequently advised the Federal Government to dialogue with the agitators rather than embrace confrontational approach, warning that the “cry of separation has gained traction among the average people.” He posited that if successive governments had delivered on their promises of abundant life and justice for the citizenry, those rooting for secession would not have been taken seriously. Tinubu spoke in Lagos in a keynote addressed entitled “A New Nigeria or a Better One: The Fitting Tools of a Great Repair,” at the 2017 annual dinner of the King’s College Old Boys Association. “Thus, we have people clamouring for secession in one part of the country and the murmur of such a course grows stronger in other sections. These other areas resent that some have advocated secession. Blame and recrimination become the political currency. Statesmanship falls in short supply. The dominant urge is to confront instead of reconcile. “It would be wrong to mistake this for a tempest in a teapot. If not careful, we may be tossed about like a teapot in a tempest. We must listen to what is being said so that we can determine what is really meant. “Let us be frank. Many who cry separation do so because their personal ambitions will be better served by such a thing. They believe they will have greater chance at political power under a different arrangement. “Yet the cry for separation has gained traction among average people; this is due to the chronic failure of government to meet basic aspirations. “If over the years, government had delivered on the promise of growth, prosperity, and justice, those calling for such extreme remedies would be but a small fringe of little consequence. “Our task is not to condemn but to listen and understand. I care not at all for this proposed solution. But I dare not discount the concerns and problems that have led many people into advocating such a thing,” he said. Tinubu opposed the dismemberment of the country as canvassed by the secessionists, and in its stead suggested a roundtable discussion of the problems militating against the growth and development of the country. “Being more pragmatic, separating the nation into small pieces resolves nothing and creates additional problems…Such a thing would make us more vulnerable to outside influences. We would forfeit our rightful place on the world stage and as a leader of this continent. “Moreover, not every split solves a problem. The political mentality, either good or bad, that defined a group before the split will remain after the divide. If one is imbued with factionalism, that perspective will remain even when the immediate problem is surmounted. Division will manifest differently, but manifest it will,” he said. He suggested a rethinking of the national economic model, which he described as not only old but crumbling and presented the greatest challenge, suggesting a national industrial policy that would foster the development of strategic industries, create jobs and ginger economic growth.  A freak accident which happened last week (June 22nd) after a car dived into the window of a residential building at Muritala Mohammed way, Adekunle Road in Yaba area of Lagos following a horrible accident with a shuttle bus. A passenger who sat in the front seat of the bus and escaped death with minor injuries - has decried the growing trend of people using their phones to record accidents rather than help the victims. According to him, people who gathered at the scene of accident refused to help victims rather they resorted to using their phone to record the horrible accident which was posted online...  Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and the Multi-National Joint Task Force have shot dead at least 57 Boko Haram terrorists in Arege area of northern Borno State, during a gun battle. The slain Boko Haram members were regrouping under trees in the area when the soldiers attacked them after getting reliable intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance platform of the air component. However, some of the Nigerian soldiers were reportedly injured during the bloody encounter. The Commander, air component of Operation Lafiya Dole, Air Commodore Charles Ohwo, confirmed the incident, while briefing journalists in Yola, Adamawa State. He said, “In Arege village of northern Borno, on Monday, an ISR operation was carried out. We discovered that a lot of fleeing Boko Haram insurgents hid under trees and the adverse weather prevented us from taking them out in an air strike. So, we communicated with the MNJTF troops around the location. “In the fire fight which ensued, at least 57 Boko Haram members were killed by the MNJTF forces. Several arms and ammunition were also recovered from the insurgents. “In Tagoshe and Gwoza hills, there were also indications that the Boko Haram terrorists had hideouts and we mobilised the ISR platform to the place. We thereafter conducted air interdiction and blew up the terrorists. We have and will continue to monitor all these areas.” On the Rann accidental bombing on Tuesday, January 17, the commander noted that the NAF authorities would reach out to the victims of the incident and their families, as soon as the NAF panel set up to investigate the incident unveiled its findings.  The University of Abuja has regained full accreditation for twelve courses, including Accounting, Business Administration, Arabic Studies, Christian Religious Studies, and English Language. Director of Quality Assurance, National Universities Commission (NUC), N.B. Saliu, made this known on Monday. Apart from the aforementioned courses, the other accredited courses are; History, Diplomatic Studies, Islamic Studies, Linguistics, Philosophy, Theatre Arts, History Education and Social Studies Education. The courses were assessed by the NUC during its accreditation visit to the university in 2016. Ediga Agbo, spokesperson of the governing council of UNIABUJA, confirmed the development. “The situation then looked so bleak that we wondered if there was a university. The Engineering students had been sent out to other universities and the medical students were on strike as they had spent 4 to 5 years without accreditation and the Council confronted these situations head-on. “Today, the university has 53 programmes with 28 having full accreditation, 23 have interim accreditation and others have denials.” Agbo said that UNIABUJA hopes to get 95 per cent of its courses approved by the NUC during the next accreditation in May.  This is evil! A Nigerian couple, Arinola and Olalekan Olawusi have been arrested in Providence, Rhode Island and arraigned on a felony charges of child neglect, child abuse. The duo were arrested on Monday afternoon, April 3, after the father made a frantic call to 911 and said his child was dying. Three-month-old Tobiloba Olawusi wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse, police say, but good firefighters resuscitated the baby in their rush to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. That’s where the medical staff found the baby had old and new injuries — bite marks and a fractured skull, broken ribs, arms and legs, said Special Assistant Attorney General Shannon Signore, chief of the office’s child abuse unit. The baby’s mother, Arinola told the police that her husband, bit the baby and pulled his legs to "make him grow and strong," Whether the child will survive remains to be seen. The baby’s prognosis was still uncertain on Tuesday, Signore said.  The Olawusis were arraigned Tuesday afternoon, April 4th, exactly 24 hours after police were called by the hospital to investigate. Arinola Olawusi was arraigned in Family Court on a felony charge of child neglect. Olalekan Olawusi was arraigned in District Court on charges of first- and second-degree child abuse. A judge set bail at $40,000 with surety for Olalekan and ordered him to surrender his Nigerian passport. The family has been living at 49 Constitution St., in the city’s West End. Both parents are ordered not to have any contact with the baby. The state Department of Children, Youth and Families has been involved with the baby since birth, said spokesman Denis Riel. An older sibling is already in foster placement with a relative, he said. DCYF is investigating the circumstances around the case and conducting an internal review, Riel said. Riel said a caseworker can have contact with a family in state care once a month, according to national standards, but there is also a network of community-based providers involved with the family. There was no formal complaint about the baby’s care, Riel added A caseworker was assigned to the family, however there was no information released about how often the family was visited or what services were recommended. Arinola Olawusi self-published a book — “A to Z Ways to Achieve Your Goals In Life” — which lists her biography as a motivational speaker who is “involved with helping pregnant and worried women and their children.” She wrote that she and her husband, Olalekan Olawusi, are “blessed with a loving son."
