A mild drama played out at the Federal High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Wednesday, when the court clerk read out a case between the Federal Medical Centre, Ovom in Yenagoa and 121 unclaimed corpses.

Lawyers and those who were in the courtroom were still in shock when Justice Ajiya Nganjiwa sought to douse the jolted occupants of the courtroom.

"Now everybody is afraid because they have mentioned corpses," the judge joked.
But the lawyer to FMC, Bayelsa, Mr. K. Clement, prayed the court to grant his 14-paragraph application requesting that the hospital should be given the go-ahead to give the unclaimed corpses a
mass burial.

After listening to the argument backing the application, the judge concurred, stating that it was "time to allow the dead rest in peace".

"The application is hereby granted for all the 121 abandoned corpses to be buried. All agencies and bodies involved must comply with this order," he said. The federal hospital had argued that the corpses would get a mass burial if the relatives of the deceased did not collect them.

THISDAY gathered that many of the bodies had been abandoned for over 10 years, thereby blocking space for fresh corpses.

Dr. Dennis Allagoa, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of FMC, Yenagoa, had earlier explained that the decision, among others, was taken to create space in the mortuary as fresh corpses were being brought in on a daily basis.

He also cited pollution of the health facility as reason for the decision to evacuate the cadavers in the next three weeks.

"We issued a 21-day public notice because we noticed that corpses have littered the entire mortuary and there was no space to take in new corpses.
"As the decay goes on in the mortuary, the corpses have become a threat to human life because chemical and biochemical effects are on-going.
"So we want to clean up the area so that people can enjoy the benefit of a good site and space to bring in their corpses," the CMD said.

Dr. Allagoa added that most of the unclaimed corpses were deposited by security personnel while others were found on the roads and creeks and brought to the morgue.

"A lot of them were corpses that were deposited by the security agents. Most of them are just bones, legs; they are not actually full body parts.
"People that died on the road, they brought them, from the river they brought them. People that died due to militancy, they brought them in their mass and they kept them here," Allagoa explained.

A robot capable of thinking for itself is set to be scrapped after it escaped from a high-tech lab for a second time.

The Promobot IR77 has been fitted with artificial intelligence meaning that it learns from its experiences and its surroundings and can remember everybody it meets, although the programmers had not expected it to yearn for freedom.

They say that despite reprogramming it twice, the robot continues to attempt to escape and they are now considering scrapping it. The other robots which have been created from the same series are well-behaved, and have not been escaping, say the team.

Promobot IR77 made headlines last week when he escaped but ran out of battery in the middle of the street after 45 minutes in the city of Perm in central Russia's Perm Krai region, Mirror reports.

The expert said that they had programmed the robot to try and avoid obstacles, and it had not been intended that it would look for ways to leave the research centre.

In the first instance it had been wandering around outside in a yard when it escaped through a gate that had not been shut properly.

Then it caused traffic chaos as vehicles swerved to avoid the robot before it finally ran out of battery.

Oleg Kivokurtsev, co-founder of the research lab that created Promobot IR77, said:
"We are currently working on third-generation robots which we plan to launch in autumn. This is why we have given all the robots artificial intelligence (AI)."

He confirmed: "We have changed the AI system twice, so now I think we might have to dismantle it."

In Austria a cleaning robot reportedly 'committed suicide' by switching itself on, and climbing on to a kitchen hotplate where it was burned to death.

The Irobot Roomba 760 robot had apparently rebelled against its chores and decided enough was enough.

the lost but found ship, SS Cotopaxi"

A ship which disappeared 90 years ago in the notorious Bermuda Triangle has reappeared.

The Cuban Coast Guard announced on Tuesday, that they had intercepted an unmanned ship heading for the island, which is presumed to be the SS Cotopaxi, a tramp steamer which vanished in December 1925 and has since been connected to the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.

The Cuban authorities spotted the ship for the first time on May 16, near a restricted military zone, west of Havana. They made many unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the crew, and finally mobilized three patrol boats to intercept it.

When they reached it, they were surprised to find that the ship was actually a nearly 100-year old steamer identified as the Cotopaxi, a name famously associated with the legend of the Bermuda Triangle. There was no one on board and the ship seemed to have been abandoned for decades, suggesting that this could actually be the tramp freighter that disappeared in 1925.

An exhaustive search of the ship led to the discovery of the captain's logbook. It was, indeed, associated with the Clinchfield Navigation Company, the owners of the SS Cotopaxi, but hasn't brought any clue concerning what happened to the ship over the last 90 years.

Cuban expert, Rodolfo Salvador Cruz, believes that the captain's logbook is authentic. This document is full of precious information concerning the life of the crew before the ship's disappearance, but the entries stop suddenly on December 1, 1925.

On 29 November 1925, the SS Cotopaxi departed Charleston, South Carolina, and headed towards Havana, Cuba. The ship had a crew of 32 men, under the command of Captain W. J. Meyer, and was carrying a cargo of 2340 tons of coal. It was reported missing two days later, and was unheard of for almost 90 years.

The Bermuda Triangle is a loosely defined region covering the area between Miami, Puerto Rico and Bermuda, where dozens of ships and planes have disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Popular culture has attributed many of the disappearances to paranormal and supernatural phenomena, or to the activity of extraterrestrial beings. One explanation, even pins the blame on leftover technology from the mythical lost continent of Atlantis.

Onyekachi Anele, 36, is currently gnashing his teeth in regret, in the custody of the police at the headquarters of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, of the Imo Police Command, Owerri.

As he ponders over what the future holds for his four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son and the stepson who is at the centre of the fate that has befallen the family, he is equally learning, in a hard and unfortunate way, the meaning of what the bible says: "The devil goes about like a roaring lion seeking who it may devour."

Anele who lived with his family in Obibiezena in Owerri North Local Government Area, is also wishing that he had restrained himself when the devil pushed his wife to stir up anger in him, not long after he returned home from vigil held at Jesus Disciples Fellowship.

Sunday Sun learnt from the Imo Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu that trouble began on June 1, 2016, when Anele's wife, 32-year-old Chikodi, asked him to give her son from an earlier marriage, N100 to take to school.

Taking up the tale, Anele said:
"I got married to my late wife Chikodi Anele over four years ago. She had a son for another man before we got married. We have been living together in peace. We have two children. Our first child, a girl, is four years old while the second child is a boy, who is just one year old." He continued:
"On May 31, 2016, I went to my church, Jesus  Disciples Fellowship, where we had a vigil. I came back around 5:30 am and started playing Christian music. My wife came to where I was and said that I should give my stepson N100 naira to go to school. I told her that I had no money with me.
"You see, my late wife was hypertensive; she became very angry that I did not give my stepson N100. She started to insult me. I got angry and slapped her.
She slapped me in return. I was shocked by her effrontery and slapped her a second time. She fell down and fainted.
"I rushed her to City Hospital, Nekede. On getting there, the doctor checked her and confirmed that she was dead. I went to the nearby police station at Umuguma and reported the matter to the police and they arrested me," he said. Promptly, the case was transferred from Umuguma Police Station to State Criminal Investigation Department, Owerri, the Imo State capital, where he has been in detention as investigation into the matter was in progress.

The officer-in-charge of the homicide section of the SCID, Supol Innocent Obi, further revealed that family members of the deceased had not yet been to the police to know the state of the matter. He stated that Anele had not yet informed them.

In anguish, Anele, told Sunday Sun:
"I love my wife. I had no intention to kill her. It was misunderstanding and annoyance that prompted me to slap her and she died. Up till now, it looks like a dream and a mystery to me. When Sunday Sun visited the compound where Anele lived with his family before the unfortunate incident happened, his neighbours were still in shock.

One of them, Chukudi Eneka said:
"They both loved each other; they were a good family. The devil just caused this thing. Suddenly we heard them quarrelling. The husband slapped the wife and the wife slapped him back. The husband then slapped her again. She fell down and fainted. We thought it was a joke. When she was taken to the hospital, the doctor said she was dead. We are shocked over the incident." In what appears like a case of Anele being abandoned to his fate, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa said that the kinsmen of Anele had not been to see him in the custody of the police, but adding that the corpse of the deceased was still in mortuary.

General / Rethink It With Me - The Nigerian Police Is Not A Friend
« on: June 20, 2016, 10:03:54 am »

Tell any Nigerian 'the Nigeria Police is your friend' and you will be bombarded with sighs, hisses, anger, laughter and in some cases threats as they reminisce and reflect upon their past experiences with their 'friends'. Almost everyone has one bad experience or the other to recount.

A few years ago a close friend of mine Chris went to buy tiles at Orile, and hired a bus to help transport it home. On their way back, the driver decided to carry some passengers, and my friend did not object.

To cut a long story short, one of the passengers who had fallen asleep woke up and on seeing the bus almost empty, dived out of the moving bus. Luckily he was not run over by oncoming vehicles but other drivers thought Chris and his driver were "one chance" armed robbers, so they were taken to the station.

The man who took a dive was brought in and via an interpreter (he's Hausa) said he was not robbed but thought he was in danger, so he flew out of the bus. Cased closed right, but it's never that simple with our friends the Nigeria Police Force.

The officers in charge demanded that Chris pay N50,000 bail before he's released and he refused. So he was charged to court and spent over 6 months in Ikoyi Prisons awaiting trial.

So I was not surprised when on Monday, June 13, 2016, I came across the story of Benue musician INAS (real name

John Inas ) who was arrested on his way home from a video shoot. He was bailed with N20,000.00 and instructed to come the next day to collect his phone because the officer with it was not around.

Only for him to be be rearrested on false charges of murder and armed robbery simply because he persisted on collecting his phone. What I don't get is why was his phone taken out of the station in the first place? Items collected from those arrested are they not supposed to be registered, filed and kept in the evidence locker?

Then a few days later another story was circulated about a man who was robbed and went to the station to report the robbery but was told to pay N5,000.00 mobilisation fee. He then decided to write a statement instead but was requested to pay for the paper.

Sadly these are not isolated incidences but everyday occurrences which will continue to happen. The problem with the Nigeria Police Force is that they have refused to upgrade from the pre-colonial era of policing, when the British hired illiterates who could not challenge their authority. The officers are well educated while a lot of the recruits can hardly spell their names.

It's a dumping ground for frustrated individuals whose lack of credentials have blessed them a future so bleak, they decided to enroll for a job which pays cowries compared to the risk and stress involved with it. These 'empowered frustrated' people then take out their frustrations on innocent citizens but I do not blame them, I blame the incompetent bosses at the top who have refused to upgrade the recruitment requirements from the pre-colonial days, besides you only get what you pay. If the startup salary was reasonable, reasonable people will apply.

These are the men we entrust our lives with. We expect them to risk their lives for a pittance and act surprised when they take off of their uniforms quickly at the sound of anything that resembles a gunshot. Just tell one of them there are armed robbers operating down the street and watch his pot belly jiggle as he races in the opposite direction. The only time they're useful is when they're busy doing the job of Road Safety officials or setting up illegal road blocks.

More than one Inspector General of police has banned checkpoints, yet they keep springing up like weeds and will continue to do so. How do you expect these recruits to meet their needs with a salary of N9,019.42 monthly, if he's not augmenting it by harassing innocent civilians on the street, it's just not feasible. It's also unreasonable for you to expect these same men to befriend their 'food source', it's like saying a street cat should stop eating rats, they'll starve to death.

The police is not my friend, at least not the ones I interact with. Friends are supposed to look out for each other. Friends do not stab each other in the back. What sort of friend oppresses his said friend simply because he wears a dirty black uniform that's not been in water for days?

What sort of friend disappears when you need him the most? The police is my friend, never, I reject and rebuke it (as my dear mom would say).

The Presidency is considering a legal action against a private lawyer, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokocha who publicly alleged lack of certificate by President Mohammadu Buhari and declared him guilty on the newspaper pages.

A Presidential Media Aide, Malam Garba Shehu, while reacting to Nwokocha's press interviews, in a statement explained that "it is unfair for a lawyer who is a litigant to a case in court to go out of his way to hijack the power of a Judge by declaring the President guilty of what he is accused of."

According to Malam Shehu, "newspaper pages are not alternative courts where a lawyer can declare anybody guilty of anything when the court has not formally given a definitive judgment on an issue before it."

Malam Garba Shehu said "if Nwokocha has not stopped his unfair and professionally inappropriate abuse of free speech, the President's competent team of lawyers will seek the instrumentality of the law in dealing with his unethical actions."

IBOM Angels player , Bessy Boniface is a hermaphrodite. And has cried out to the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Martha Udom Emmanuel for help over her status.

Born with both male and female organs, Boniface, an orphan whom doctors confirmed has 85% female and 15% male organs is having an identity crisis, lacking the confidence to call herself either a man or woman.

The former Delta Queens striker was thrown out of the Falconets camp before the Chile 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup when the coaches discovered they had a player that could not pass for a complete woman.

To compound Bessy's woes, she was duped in 2010 by those who pretended to be raising funds for her to have a corrective surgery Oversees.

Speaking with Saturday Sun Sports, in an emotion-laden voice, the Akwa- Ibom State born footballer, presently nursing a fractured knee injury, said she longs to have a family of her own and had made frantic efforts to get the attention of Akwa Ibom State First Lady but to no avail.

"I have been going through a traumatic time and it has not been easy coping with the situation," Boniface began. "Through the help of some people, I have tried severally to see if I can get the attention of my state government. This has not been successful.
The last effort I made, I was advised to write a letter and send it via DHL to the governors office. When I enquired about the procedure, I was told that to send a letter through DHL will cost N10,000, which I could not afford. As the breadwinner of my family, it has been tough making ends meet. Throughout last year I did not play with my Club Ibom Angels because of the injury I sustained."

Continuing, Bessey said:
"My wish is to get married and raise a family of my own, but I cannot have it because of this situation. whom do I run to, where will my help come from? Doctors have told me that I'm 85 per cent woman. I need the help of Nigerians to come out of my nasty condition, I plead with them to help me raise some money for an operation to correct my condition." Ironically, she said her younger sister, Monica Boniface,  her status has affected her sexual life as she has no boy friend.
"Intimate relationship with the men? Truth be told, I don't have any boyfriend. I long to have a relationship with men but I cannot because of this issue. It is a very embarrassing one. How do you explain to a man that you have both organs, which man will stand such a situation?. However, I believe that God will not let me waste away like this. I believe that Nigerians will listen to my case and plea and come to my assistance. I pray that God will touch their hearts to come to my rescue," she cried.

Ekaete, as her team mates fondly call her, in the 2007 women's league season, scored a total of 12 goals for Delta Queens - seven in the League, three in the Challenge Cup and two in the Super Four.

Meanwhile, it would be recalled that a similar problem ended Iyabo Abade's career with the Super Falcons, when it was discovered that she had both male and female organs. She returned from a successful operation in the United States as a man and immediately changed her name to James Johnson. Like Iyabo, Bessy must undergo surgery to either remain a woman or launch herself into the men's world.

Argentina secured their place in the semi-finals of the Copa America with a 4-1 win over Venezuela on Saturday night.

Check out how the Albiceleste squad celebrated their victory in the dressing room at the Gillette Stadium in Boston.. All seven players, including Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano, are sat down on their seats in the same position, heads tilted towards their mobile phones.

The image has gone viral online less than six hours after Argentine international Ezequiel Lavezzi shared the curious photo.

However, it's also provoked controversy in Venezuela, as it seems their players' shirts, which the Argentine players would have received via a swap, have been left on the floor, which is seen as a lack of respect.

Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney has asked a big favour of new manager, Jose Mourinho which will keep him at the club till the end of his career.

According to Manchester Evening News, "Rooney has been talking about an Old Trafford extension and his new role in the team".

The publication reports that Rooney wants to finish his career at Manchester United by signing a new contract. Thirty-year-old Rooney is already United's highest-paid player and still has three years remaining on his current deal after signing a five-year agreement in 2014.
But latest reports say that he would like to sign a new contract and see out his playing days at Old Trafford.

"I have a contract at the club that I want to see out and wouldn't be against extending it - but that's up to the club," he was quoted as telling United We Stand.

Rooney is also looking accepting of the fact his game will continue to change under new manager Jose Mourinho.

The Liverpool-born United and England captain has dropped into midfield for club and country and added: "All players' games develop and change over time - look at Giggsy towards the end of his career compared to the beginning.

"What I can say is I will continue to develop my game and adapt and improve throughout.

"Over time and with experience, you see the game and experience the game differently, which leads to different decisions.

"I think my record shows I have always enjoyed assisting goals as much as scoring them and I also enjoy the involvement from deeper positions."
