Nigerian troops deployed in Borno State have rescued several abducted persons, arrested suspected Boko Haram terrorists, and recovered weapons and equipment, the army said in a statement.

The troops of 81 Battalion and 251 Task Force Battalion, 25 Task Force Brigade on Monday received 79 persons who claimed to have been kept captives by Boko Haram terrorists at Ngwalimiri village but escaped at their location.

They comprised 12 men, 24 women, 31 children and 12 infants. All of them are undergoing preliminary investigation and screening to determine their status before onward movement to Internally Displaced Persons camp for rehabilitation, the statement said.

"In furtherance of the efforts to keep Bitta-Damboa road open and secure to commuters, troops of 28 Task Force Brigade have cleared Bulajani, Mulgwo and Muotu villages of remnants of Boko Haram elements.
"During an encounter at Moutu specifically, a soldier sustained an injury on the forehead, while 5 Boko Haram terrorists were killed by the troops, while a few others were suspected to escape with gun shot wounds. The troops recovered 3 locally made guns.
"The advancing troops linked up with their counterparts of 25 Task Force Brigade at Gombori village and rescued 157 persons escaping from Boko Haram terrorists captivity. The rescued persons comprised 47 women, 91 children, 19 men. They are currently undergoing preliminary investigation and thorough screening to also determine their status.
"In a related development 77 Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered themselves to troops of 122 Task Force Battalion. They comprised 17 men, 16 women, 16 male children and 28 female children.
The surrendered terrorists have been moved to Yamteke by combined team of 26 Task Force Brigade for preliminary investigation and screening.
"Troops have also arrested a deserter soldier, 03NA/53/3098 Corporal Musa Titima of 117 Task Force Battalion, attached to 114 Task Force Battalion, who absconded from duty while on Operation Crackdown at Bitta. The soldier was also allegedly involved in a fracas with Mr Salisu Ngatha at Kabang Ward on 30th May 2016 that led to the death of the civilian. The soldier has been moved to the Brigade headquarters for proper investigation and other disciplinary process," the statement said.

The NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, made the disclosure in an interview in Maiduguri. Abdullahi said that the factories were discovered during a patrol by men of the command in collaboration with the troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army.

Some IEDs making equipment, gas cylinders and a jet bomb propeller were discovered and handed over to the brigade command.

On January 22, 2016, I tweeted a joke which went viral. I had said that at meetings of the Federal Executive Council, the minister of information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, would address members and say 'turn to your neighbour and say, neighbour have you blamed Jonathan today'!
Yes, it was a joke, but like most good jokes, it had and still has a basis in reality!

The President and his ministers appear ill prepared for office and the evidence of this is their inability to take responsibility for the situation of things in Nigeria.

Was it not John Burroughs who said "a man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else"?

Those words should be embossed on a plaque and placed in a very prominent location at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa.

Seeing this admonition weekly may help members of the Federal Executive Council take responsibility and stop acting the victim.

For example, Nigerians were shocked when the minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in December of 2015 that the Jonathan administration, which had left office six months ago, was responsible for the biting fuel scarcity the nation was and still is grappling with.

That statement by Mr. Lai Mohammed is a classic case of psychological projection (a psychological disorder characterized by a patient defending himself against his own unpleasant realities by denying the existence of the reality while at the same time blaming another for it).

And it gets worse. It is bad enough that this administration refuses to take responsibility for its own failures, it also wants to take credit for the success of others.

In a treatise bothering on megalomania, the publicity and communications team of President Buhari's office claimed the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (AKA TSA) as the major achievement of the first 365 days of the Buhari administration.

But for a government that prides itself on anti-corruption, that statement, fraudulent as it is, is dishonest and 'fantastically corrupt'!

First of all, the Treasury Single Account WAS NOT an idea of the Buhari administration and secondly the present government DID NOT initiate its implementation.

The TSA was conceived by the Jonathan administration and there was to be a staggered implementation because from an expert point of view, it was thought that if all Federal Government funds were suddenly pulled out of the commercial banking sector in one fell swoop, the shock on that sector would be so immense that it would trigger job losses and perhaps bank failures. It was thought that a gradual implementation would allow banks recover such that the baby would not be thrown out with the bath water.

Enter the Buhari administration which, in a hurry to claim credit, did not tread with caution, but in one fell swoop forcefully withdrew all Federal Government funds with the threat of sanctions to non compliant banks.

Rather than claim this as an achievement, this administration should chalk this one up as a big failure because in their rush to implement something that should have been gradual they have unleashed an unintended consequence on the banking sector such that Nigerian banks over the last year have shed something like 50,000 jobs.

As a matter of fact, the pro-Buhari LeadershipNewspaper had as a major headline on September 12, 2015, 'Banks Begin Massive Sack Over Treasury Single Account'!

Yet, even as the reality of their rushed action stares them in the face, a Presidential spokesman has the nerve to accuse former President Jonathan of lacking the will to implement the TSA!

And the excuses continue! In order to explain away its lackluster performance, various ministers and mouthpieces of the current administration have been touring media houses blaming the precarious state of the economy on the refusal of the Jonathan administration to save for the rainy day when crude oil prices were high.

In fact, President Buhari himself said "In the First Republic, more enduring infrastructure was built with meager resources. But in the past 16 years, we made a lot of money without planning for the rainy day."

But even as this administration is set on revising history, it should not be forgotten so soon that the Jonathan administration met about $6.5 billion in the Excess Crude Account, ECA, and increased it to almost $9 billion by 2012. However, the Nigerian Governors Forum, using their influence at the House of Representatives, had gotten that August body to declare the Excess Crude Account illegal in 2012.

So excruciating was the pressure from the NGF and most notably from then then Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, for the Jonathan administration to end the Excess Crude Account and the Sovereign Wealth Fund and instead share the funds in those accounts amongst the three tiers of government that they approached the Supreme Court, to challenge the legality of the Excess Crude Account and Jonathan's decision to transfer $1 billion from that account to the Sovereign Wealth Fund.

Working in tandem with Amaechi and his supporters in the NGF, the then minority APC members of the House of Representatives approached a Federal High Court on the 7th of February, 2014, for a perpetual injunction restraining the Jonathan administration from operating the ECA and to pay all the proceeds of that account into the Federation Account for sharing amongst the three tiers of government.

So it is quite clear that President Buhari made the accusation he made on April 4th, 2016 without cross checking the facts or consulting history. If the President is not happy that more funds were not saved in the Excess Crude Account, he should call a Federal Executive Council meeting and ask members to get up and point accusing fingers at his ministers of transport and Power, Works and Housing.

In the last 365 days, the most consistent thing that has emanated from the Federal Executive Council is blames, excuses, finger pointing and a refusal to accept responsibility.

As at last count, the President and his ministers have excused their inability to stem the economic tide, fully defeat Boko Haram, provide jobs for Nigerians, maintain the availability of petrol, fix roads and improve power on the previous administration.

The funniest thing is that just as the media team of the Buhari led Presidency was reeling out its achievement in office on its first anniversary, two state governors were also doing the same thing.

The shocking thing however is that if you get the list of achievements released by Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike and Lagos state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and compare them with what has been released by the Presidency, the shocking verdict is that in terms of tangible achievements, like roads built and houses constructed and public infrastructure, both of these states have individually outperformed the Federal Government!

Do not take my word for it. Google their released anniversary documents and compare and contrast them by yourself. Ignore such silly and intangible achievements included in the Presidential list like 'motivated the military' and 'no more road blocks and curfews' (believe me, the President's team listed these as his achievements!) and focus on tangibles like roads constructed or hospitals built etc and it becomes clear to even the most brainwashed Buhari supporter that both Lagos and Rivers individually beat the Federal Government hands down.

Both Wike and Ambode took over from predecessors that did not really support them and who left huge debts and a high monthly wage bill, yet despite these seeming obstacles, both of them have proven the adage true that you will either find a way or you will find an excuse.

And for those who are saying that it is not realistic to expect a new government to achieve much, let me remind them that in his first year in office, former President Jonathan did not deliver excuses or blames.

In fact in his first year, former President Jonathan revived the Nigerian Railway Corporation and for the first time in decades the Lagos to Kano rail services commenced in 2012 at a cost of ₦1500. He also built nine new universities including the only federal university in Katsina state where President Buhari hails from. Inflation reduced from 10.2% to 9.4% in his first year and remained at single digits throughout his tenure. Average Life Expectancy increased from 47 years to 52 years (according to the UN). In the same period he also launched the NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X satellites to expand Internet Bandwidth and provide early warning to prevent natural disasters as well established the Automotive Development Fund amongst others.

Many Nigerians must be wondering that if the Jonathan administration was as bad as the Buhari government says it is, then how come he had to leave office before they started experiencing double digit inflation, negative economic growth rate and 'budget padding'?

In conclusion, the word 'execute' means to carry out or put into effect something. When you have a body of men and women who are not carrying out anything, it is hard to see how you can honestly call them a Federal Executive Council. What are they executing? Put it this way, are you an executive if all you do is execute excuses?

An elephant that lived alone at a zoo in Tokyo for 67 years sparking a worldwide campaign to free her has died in her concrete pen.

Hanako, or 'flower child', who was described by campaigners as the 'loneliest elephant in the world', died at the age of 69 at Inokashira Park Zoo in the Japanese capital.
She was a gift from the Thai government in 1949 and had lived at the park since she was two. She was Japan's oldest elephant and had a long life for captive Asian elephants.

Zoo spokesman Naoya Ohashi said Hanako was discovered lying on her side on Thursday morning and repeated efforts to raise her upright were not successful. She died peacefully in the afternoon.

Naoya said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause.

Ulara Nakagawa, a Vancouver resident whose blog inspired the petition drive for Hanako, said it was sad how the elephant had spent her life in an enclosure without dirt or grass and water to splash around in.

"Most tragic is that she was deprived of true, lasting companionship, which is crucial to an elephant's overall well-being," she wrote in an email.
"I hope that Hanako's legacy will be to inspire her fans in Japan and elsewhere to better educate themselves on elephant welfare and work to expose and improve the living conditions of the many other captive zoo elephants who need us," she wrote.
"Rest in peace, Hanako. You will not be forgotten."

A police sergeant, identified as Yusuf Bello, and an accomplice, Idowu Badmus, have been detained by the police in Lagos State for allegedly snatching motorcycles and selling them in the Iyana Iba area of the state.

Punch Metro learnt that Bello, who is attached to the Itire Police Division, was arrested on Monday by the Igando Police Division after a victim, identified only as Aramide, reported that he was robbed of his motorcycle at Iyana School bus stop on the Lagos State University-Iyana Iba Road.

It was gathered that the police had recovered three stolen motorcycles from the sergeant and his accomplice, while the buyer and a motor mechanic had also been detained.

Aramide had reportedly identified his motorcycle among the three recovered by the police.

Punch learnt that on Sunday at about 1pm, the sergeant, who wore a black police T-shirt, and his accomplice, Badmus, who was in mufti, had accosted Aramide, at the Iyana School bus stop.
The suspects, who also came on a motorcycle, were said to have slapped Aramide, and ordered him to come down from the motorcycle.

Badmus was said to have displayed a police ID card and a pair of handcuffs.

The two allegedly told Aramide that they were from the Iba Police Division, adding that they were taking his motorcycle into the police station.

Punch Metro learnt that when Aramide came down, one of the two suspects started the motorcycle and rode off, while the other followed him on the motorcycle they brought.

The suspects were said to have escaped with the motorcycles instead of riding it into the Iba Police Division, where they claimed to have come from.

Aramide was said to have reported the matter at the Iba and Igando police divisions, after which he boarded a motorcycle to trace the suspects.

Punch Metro learnt that Badmus was, however, arrested on Sunday on Makinde Close, Ile Epo bus stop on LASU-Iyana Iba Road, while allegedly returning from another operation.

A landlord on Makinde Close, who did not want his name in print, said it was residents who arrested Badmus, and handed him over to the police at Igando.
He added that the arrest of Badmus led to the sergeant's arrest on Monday.
He said, "I was in front of my house around 4pm. I saw a man riding a motorcycle into our close being followed by another man on a motorcycle who was shouting, 'help help, thief, thief.' That got everyone's attention.
"When we stopped both motorcycles, the man, who gave his name as Idowu (Badmus) showed us an ID card, saying he was a policeman from the Ikotun division. He said he seized the motorcycle from the man at Iyana Iba.
"So, I asked him how his jurisdiction got to Iyana Iba from Ikotun. We took all of them in a car to the Ikotun division. It was at Ikotun that he was discovered to be a fake policeman and the police arrested him and transferred him to Igando.
"When they interviewed him, he confessed to have snatched about three motorcycles and identified a police sergeant in Itire as his accomplice. That was how the sergeant was arrested on Monday. We heard that there are some fake policemen working with real policemen to perpetuate crimes on the LASU-Iyana Iba Road. The police should investigate them."

Speaking with Punch Metro, one of the victims, Aramide, said, "Around 1pm, I took a lady from Iyana Iba to Adolf, near Iyana School bus stop. While I was waiting to take her back in front of a pharmacy, two men on a motorcycle stopped in front of my motorcycle.

"One of them showed me a police ID card and the other slapped me. They asked me to stand up from the motorcycle. They said they were from the Iba division and they were taking it to the station.
"Immediately I got down from the motorcycle, one of them jumped on it and zoomed off, while the other followed on the motorcycle they brought. They did not go to the Iba station. I was shouting, 'thief thief' but no one could help.
"I took a motorcycle to Obadore junction, but I could not find them. I went to my house in Akesan."

Aramide said it was in the evening that he learnt that a suspected motorcycle snatcher was arrested and had been taken to the Igando division, adding that he went there and saw that it was Badmus.

A police source told Punch Metro that the suspects tampered with the motorcycles they snatched before selling them.
He said, "The suspects had removed the number plates and plastic covers of the recovered motorcycles. Badmus confessed that he usually worked with Bello, a sergeant in Itire division."

The Lagos State Deputy police Public Relations Officer, DSP Damasus Ozoani, confirmed Badmus' arrest.
He added that the suspect mentioned a policeman as his accomplice.
"The complaint was made against Badmus and three motorcycles were recovered from him.
"The suspect named a policeman as his accomplice. Investigation is ongoing."

Amber Heard has reportedly filed for divorce from Johnny Depp just 15 months after they got married. The actress, 30, cited irreconcilable differences when she filed the petition on Monday, according to TMZ.

Amber, who first started dating Johnny in 2012 after meeting on the set of The Rum Diary, is said to be seeking spousal support.

Sources tell the website the couple had no prenuptial agreement in place before they tied the knot.

Johnny - who is estimated to be worth around $400 million - is now said to have filed a response through his lawyer Laura Wasser asking for Amber's claim for spousal support to be turned down.

Amber filed for divorce just two days after Johnny's mum Betty Sue Palmer passed away.

A mother in India has given birth to a 15-pound baby girl, believed to be the heaviest female infant ever born.

The child weighs the same amount as the average six-month-old and is reportedly twice the size of the average baby.

The baby, who is unnamed, was delivered by cesarean section to her 19-year-old mother, known only as Nandini.

Doctors believe her weight overtakes the alleged current record holder, Carisa Rusack, who was born weighing 14lb 5oz in Massachusetts in 2014.

Dr Venkatesh Raju, the local health officer, said: "In my 25 years of experience, I had never seen such a big baby.

"She is a miracle. I believe she is not only the heaviest baby born in India but the heaviest baby girl ever born in the world."
