File photo: Suspected internet fraudsters arrested in Abuja by the EFCC

Internet fraudsters in Ibadan, Oyo State popularly regarded as ‘Yahoo Boys’ or ‘G-Boys’ have been going into hiding as the foremost anti-graft agency in Nigeria – Economic and Financial Crimes Commission continues its massive raid of their hide-outs.

The EFCC stemmed up its harvest of the fraudsters across Nigeria with serious arrests recorded in Ibadan, Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ilorin and other major cities in the country this year thereby unsettling the scammers living flamboyant lives.

One of the largest cities in West Africa – Ibadan, of late has become a safe haven for Yahoo Boys taking refuge in the suburbs of the city of brown roofs.
The story seems to be different this year as agents of the EFCC have been raiding the fraudsters at different locations with their suspected proceeds of fraud seized from them.

A panicky source told Tori News he has been keeping a low profile to avoid the prying eyes of the EFCC.

"I have parked my car at a safe place. I’m not using it until the EFCC reduces its tempo of arrests. I can’t even use the bank to obtain money from my clients. I have also being avoiding beer parlours because one doesn’t know who is who presently." he said.

Tori News was also informed that some Yahoo Boys have been taking up menial jobs temporarily to hoodwink the EFCC operatives who they believe are operating undercover in Ibadan.

Another source named Gabriel (not real name) revealed how he has been unable to drive the fairly used multi millionaire Honda Crosstour he just purchase with his loot.

"I can’t drive my new car around town. The street is not safe. These guys (EFCC operatives) are ruthless. They will seize all your properties and still parade you. I can’t stand the disgrace of having my pictures on social media pages and blogs with the tag of a ‘Yahoo Boy’. In fact, I don’t leave my house unless the reason is important. That’s how we are surviving now" he concluded.

Another fraudster, a young man in his late 20s who doubles as a music record label owner complained to a Tori News correspondent that the ‘fraud deals’ have been slow of late due to the activities of the EFCC officials. He alleged they seem to be working in concert with members of the controversial Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS or prostitutes popularly regarded as ‘Oloshos’ in intelligence gathering.

"This EFCC guys are not joking, there raids are done with so much accuracy. The house they raided around the Ologuneru area last week was close of mine. I almost rented an apartment there but I changed my mind. Just last week, I was apparently running helter skelter with my friend because they were at strategic locations in town and we had to avoid them" he said.

Most of the Yahoo Boys this paper contacted believe the heat is nothing but a ‘momentary madness’ which the EFCC can’t sustain.

"We have seen this before now, it happened early last year in Lagos and many of my friends had to leave the Island area to avoid arrest and asset seizure. Today, the guys have returned to their homes and they are working freely." one young man named Haruna said.

Haruna revealed that they expect the war on Yahoo Boys to wind down in two months time. He went on to explain that the officials of the anti-corruption agency are hard to ‘negotiate’ with.

"Its very difficult to bribe these guys. They will dig out everything you are hiding. Even if they will set you free, they will make sure they strip you naked financially" he added.

Rumours making the round in Ibadan revealed the EFCC arrested one popular and established Yahoo Boy named Leke and rendered him bankrupt.

5 exotic cars, over N100 million and his house in Lagos State were confiscated after investigation. The former ‘poster boy’ who purportedly sleeps with ladies at will is presently moving around town on commercial motorcycles as he is completely broke.

Health and Welfare / 16 Best Ways To Soothe A Diaper Rash
« on: February 12, 2019, 01:02:26 pm »

If you have little ones in your life, you know how much work it takes to keep them healthy. Diaper rashes can be a constant problem for those first few years of childhood, as spending even a few minutes in a soggy onesie can irritate delicate baby skin.

It goes without saying you want your baby’s bums to find relief as soon as possible, but it’s not always easy to know what to try. After all, conventional skincare products often contain harsh ingredients that often make the problem worse. Thankfully, there are plenty of options for natural remedies for a diaper rash, and this article will teach you what to try.

But first, let’s look at some facts behind diaper rashes so you can better understand the problem you’re striving to fix in the first place.

What Causes Diaper Rashes?
Officially known as diaper dermatitis, a diaper rash is a broad term used to classify skin conditions that infants develop around their diapers. One sign that your baby has a diaper dermatitis is a red bumpy rash that extends through the buttocks to the back of the legs. Most diaper rashes are caused by your child’s bum staying wet too long, as this can irritate sensitive skin, and the warm, moist environment creates the perfect habitat space for yeasts and bacteria to thrive.

You might assume that a minor diaper rash will get better on its own, but the truth is that neglecting to treat skin problems on your baby when they first appear can cause them to worsen to the point of peeling skin, oozing pus, and even fevers. While it’s essential that you talk to your doctor about any skin condition on your child that looks alarming, there’s a lot you can do to treat mild diaper rashes at home with ingredients you already own.

16 Natural Home Remedies To Soothe A Diaper Rash
Though baby skin is delicate and can respond differently to a variety of treatments, these natural alternatives for conventional diaper rash treatments have stood the test of time and might help your kid find relief.

1. Let Those Baby Bums Breath
Because of how sensitive baby skin can be, even a few minutes of wetness is often enough to trigger a diaper rash. Stop your child from suffering by changing her diaper as often as possible, and letting her skin breath between changes for at least an hour each day.

2. Invest In Green Baby Products
Many seemingly innocent skincare products contain more unpleasant compounds than you want to know about, including synthetic dyes, fragrances, and preservatives that can irritate sensitive skin. To keep your kid feeling comfortable and free from rashes, consider sticking to all-natural baby wipes and diapers, or skip the plastic altogether and switch to cloth diapers. You might need to experiment with a few brands before you find one that works for your baby, but starting with the right products can prevent a diaper rash from developing in the first place.

3. Soothe With Coconut Oil
One of the best ways to soothe a diaper rash is turning to a product you likely use on your own skin – coconut oil. Not only does this tropical smelling oil offer soothing hydration, but it also creates a natural barrier between the skin and irritants and acts as a natural anti-fungal to kill off the yeasts responsible.

4. Go Back To The Basics With Browned Flour
This time-honored diaper rash treatment has fallen to the wayside, but not because it doesn’t work! Help your baby find relief by cooking some unbleached all-purpose flour over medium heat with a whisk, sifting apart lumps until the flour is a sandy color. You can sprinkle it on a bad rash like baby powder, and keep applying after every diaper change until the rash goes away (usually within a few days).

5. Make A Homemade Rash Cream
The secret to many successful diaper rash treatments is creating a barrier between the baby skin and any potential irritants.

It’s possible to make a DIY diaper cream by blending one tablespoon coconut oil, ¼ cup shea butter, two tablespoons of zinc oxide and your choice of essential oil (lavender, chamomile and tea tree oil all work well). Once well mixed, you can run the cream directly onto the irritated skin.

6. Dab On Some Yogurt
If you’ve got plain yogurt on hand, you can use some as a natural diaper rash treatment for your baby. Just apply some (room temperature for comfort) yogurt on the irritated skin in a thick paste, and leave it in place between diaper changes for a soothing remedy.

7. Apply Apple Cider Vinegar
There’s a lot to like about apple cider vinegar, and this versatile product has impressive potential for soothing a diaper rash. Consider adding one cup to your baby’s bathwater and let her/him soak for fifteen minutes so that the vinegar can act as a natural disinfectant and kill off any yeast responsible for the rash.

You can also help prevent a rash from forming in the first place by rinsing reusable diapers in a bucket of water mixed with a cup and a half of vinegar. These treated diapers create an inhospitable environment for the yeasts that trigger the irritation.

8. Soak With Epsom Salts
Long loved for their ability to make every bath feel luxurious, Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) have natural anti-inflammatory properties that let them soothe a diaper rash. You can pour half a cup into a tub of warm water, and allow your baby to soak in the water at least ten minutes. Repeat this treatment twice per week for long term results.

9. Consider A Sip Of Cranberry Juice
Too much urine exposure is a leading cause of diaper rashes, as its naturally high alkaline content is a skin irritant. Help your baby balance out her pH levels with a spoonful or two of cranberry juice each day. This succeeds in neutralizing urine, which reduces its risk of triggering inflammation. Always ask your pediatrician before introducing something into your baby’s diet.

10. Apply Aloe Vera
Few plant compounds are as naturally soothing on irritated skin as aloe vera gel, and it turns out this cooling gel feels as good on a diaper rash as it does a sunburn. Fresh or bottled aloe vera well both work well, and its antibacterial properties mean it also works to treat rashes at their source.

11. Use An Oatmeal Bath
Another pantry staple to make this list, oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties that make it perfect for soothing skin irritated by a diaper rash. It also has a high protein content, which preserves the natural skin barrier and pulls dirt and oil for pores that can otherwise trigger irritation. It’s possible to draw an oatmeal bath for your baby by steeping a cupful of raw oats in a tied cheesecloth so that you essentially make a giant teabag. This oat infusion creates silky smooth bath water that has a mild, soothing effect for sensitive skin.

12. Consider Cornstarch
Though talcum powder is the more popular product, consider using cornstarch to dry out your baby’s buns instead. There’s less risk of irritation, so long as you keep it far away from the baby’s still developing lungs.

13. Try Tea Tree Oil
This wonder oil is a stellar antiseptic with antibacterial properties, meaning that it can clear up diaper rashes quickly. Add a few drops of top quality tea tree oil to a carrier oil like coconut oil, and apply liberally to the irritated skin.

14. Add Some Olive Oil
If you’re looking for an everyday cleaning agent to keep baby skin healthy and at low risk of developing a diaper rash, olive oil can be a soothing skin solution. Gently rub in a few drops after each diaper change, and you’ll keep your baby’s skin smooth and irritation free.

15. Brew Chamomile Tea & Honey
As delicious as chamomile tea and honey taste in your teacup, they also work together as a powerful solution for healing a diaper rash. You can mix two cups of lukewarm tea with a teaspoon of honey and apply it through a spray bottle to the diaper rash.

16. Bet On Breast Milk
For those seeking a genuinely all-natural solution to diaper rashes, breast milk can soothe and heal irritated skin. However, it’s not a smart strategy if the outbreak is caused by a growth of yeast, as milk sugars will only feed it further and trigger its growth. If the rash looks bright red and consists of defined patches with raised edges, there’s a good chance yeast is to blame. Ask a health professional first if your unsure.

Get Rid Of Diaper Rashes For Good
There’s nothing worse than watching a baby suffer, which is why finding a natural remedy for diaper rashes is so important. Experiment with one or more of the ideas in this article, and there’s an excellent chance that your baby’s skin will soon be restored.

Always seek professional advice if your baby has a rash and you are unsure of the cause.

Health and Welfare / 8 Reasons To Eat More Walnuts
« on: February 12, 2019, 01:00:50 pm »

Walnuts are wrinkly, bumpy, double lobed nuts of the Juglandaceae family. The edible kernels we know and love are technically fruits since they are formed within a fleshy green drupe that encloses the hard nut shell. Mild and smooth in taste and texture, walnuts can be enjoyed raw, toasted, and sprinkled atop many dishes and desserts to add some buttery crunch.

Walnuts also happen to be among the world’s healthiest foods.

1. Walnuts Are Incredibly Nutritious
Walnuts are an excellent source of healthy fats, protein, fiber, and minerals:

Per Cup of Walnuts, Chopped       % of DV
Calories   765   38%
Protein   17.8 g   36%
Fiber   7.8 g   31%
Fat   76.3 g   117%
Vitamin C   1.5 mg   3%
Vitamin E   0.8 mg   4%
Vitamin K   3.2 mcg   4%
Thiamin   0.4 mg   27%
Riboflavin   0.2 mg   10%
Niacin   1.3 mg   7%
Vitamin B6   0.6 mg   31%
Folate   115 mcg   29%
Pantothenic Acid   0.7 mg   7%
Calcium   115 mg   11%
Iron   3.4 mg   19%
Magnesium   185 mg   46%
Phosphorus   405 mg   40%
Potassium   512 mg   15%
Zinc   3.6 mg   24%
Copper   1.9 mg   93%
Manganese   4 mg   200%
Selenium   5.7 mcg   8%

 2. Walnuts Are Rich In Antioxidants
In addition to its vitamin C and E content, walnuts provide other important antioxidants.

According to a study published in Food Chemistry, walnut kernels are composed of at least seven phenolic compounds that display strong antioxidant activity. Of these, four were found to display higher free radical scavenging activity than Trolox, a positive control with a similar biochemical structure to vitamin E.

Although it is usually removed before consumption, the thin, papery skin that clings to the kernel of a shelled walnut demonstrates a much more potent antioxidant status than the nut itself. In a 2008 analysis comparing walnut skins (also referred to as hulls or pellicles) with dehulled walnut kernel flour, the skins displayed a higher margin of antioxidant activity. For example, the hulls of the Criolla variety of walnut had an antioxidant activity score of 286, but when the same variety was de-skinned and rendered into a flour, its antioxidant activity was reduced to 15.1.

The antioxidant content of walnuts have proved to be readily bioavailable as well. Just one hour after consuming walnuts, healthy volunteers had significantly higher concentrations of ellagitannins in their blood and urine per a 2014 study.

3. Walnuts Are A Good Source Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that provide a myriad of health benefits. These dietary fats have been associated with the prevention of cardiovascular disease, preserving cognitive function, and boosting fetal development.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are two types of omega-3 fats that are derived only from marine sources such as seafood, fermented cod liver oil, or krill oil. A third type of omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is found only in plant sources like flaxseed, soy, canola, and walnuts.

ALA is a precursor to EPA and DHA. When we consume foods high in ALA, our bodies convert it into EPA and DHA.

While most research on omega-3 fats have focused on EPA and DHA, some studies have investigated the health effects of consuming foods high in ALA. In a 5-year study involving 605 patients, a high ALA diet reduced the incidence of death from cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction compared to a standard diet. A 2009 review of the cardiovascular effects of consuming ALA rich flaxseed found that it is cardio protective and reduces many of the risk factors associated with heart disease. In the case of eating walnuts specifically, a small 2006 study found that eating just four walnuts per day for three weeks boosted ALA content in blood and significantly increased EPA and DHA levels as compared to baseline levels.

4. Walnuts Promote A Healthy Gut
The microbiome of the human gut contains tens of trillions of microorganisms, with at least 1,000 distinct species of bacteria and more than 3 million genes. Gut flora is found in the stomach and intestines and its content is influenced by your age and geographical location. Each individual’s gut bacteria is as unique as a fingerprint.

An imbalance of gut flora plays a role in many disparate diseases – from ulcers to cancer to psychiatric disorders – so keeping your digestive system happy is well advised.

The easiest way to alter the composition of your gut bacteria is through your diet, by eating more probiotics and prebiotics.

Although not a prebiotic by definition, walnuts may act as a prebiotic by selectively promoting and increasing the activity and volume of  good bacteria in the gut. Published in Nutrients, the 2018 study found that consuming 43 grams of walnuts each day for eight weeks significantly changes the composition and diversity in the gut by enhancing probiotic species. Eating walnuts also increased intestinal butyrate, a short chain fatty acid that regulates gene expression; it has been associated with preventing inflammation, insulin resistance, strokes, and colon cancer.

5. Walnuts For Appetite & Weight Control
Like all nuts, walnuts are dense in calories. And yet, in numerous studies investigating the health benefits of walnuts, participants who added them to their existing diet did not gain weight – even while the number of calories consumed increased.

To better understand this disparity, researchers recruited 90 healthy individuals for a year long study. Published in British Journal of Nutrition, the crossover trial involved volunteers consuming 28 to 56 grams of walnuts each day for six months and then switching to their regular diets (sans walnuts) for another six months as control. The participants consumed 35 g of walnuts per day on average, which should translate to a theoretical weight gain of more than 11 pounds over six months. But the results of the study showed that changes to body weight, fat mass, percentage of body fat, fat-free mass, and total body water were minimal and insignificant.

In another study investigating the effects of a walnut rich diet on the metabolic parameters of type 2 diabetes patients, subjects who ate 30 grams of walnuts per day for one year experienced 2 to 4 pounds of weight loss (despite being on weight maintenance diets) and improved insulin, cholesterol, and fasting glucose levels.

There are several mechanisms at work that might explain these counterintuitive findings. Walnuts are high in fiber, a carbohydrate that passes through the body undigested. High fiber foods tend to produce feelings of satiety. Walnuts also have a good polyunsaturated to saturated fats ratio, which can kick off diet induced thermogenesis, a natural process that helps boost the metabolism, speeds up fat burning, and suppresses appetite. Although walnuts are high in total fat, eating them whole leads to poor fat absorption, and scientists have found that people who eat nuts tend to have a higher amount of fat in their stools. Also, walnuts may not even be as calorie dense we think.

6. Walnuts Boost Brainpower
Although all types of nuts are great brain food, walnuts appear to have an edge over the rest.

The link between walnuts and better brain function was gleaned from data produced in NHANES, a large scale survey of over 20,000 American adults. Published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, those who consumed 10 grams or more of walnuts each day had significantly faster response time, information processing speed, and higher scores for memory, concentration, and motor control than those who never ate nuts. The walnut group’s scores were slightly better than those who occasionally ate walnuts along with other kinds of nuts.

Because walnuts are enriched with antioxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, eating them on the regular also has a neuroprotective effect by slowing brain aging and lowering the risk of chronic neurodegenerative disorders later in life.

7. Walnuts Are Chemoprotective
The combination of phytochemicals in walnuts – and in particular ellagitannins – may provide protection against several types of cancer.

In a 2015 study, women who ate a minimum of 28 grams of walnuts, almonds, or peanuts at least once a week had a 2 to 3 times lower risk of developing breast cancer.

In a test tube study on prostate cancer cell cultures, the ellagitannins in walnuts were found to suppress and inhibit the expression of genes associated with prostate cancer and induced apoptosis (or cell death) of certain prostate cell lines.

Walnuts have also been shown to protect against colon cancers in a 2016 animal study. By eating a diet that included 7% walnuts, tumors in mice were reduced more than twofold.

8. Walnuts Improve Male Fertility
The Western diet is associated with high intakes of fried foods, high fat dairy, salt, processed meat, butter, refined grains, and high fructose corn syrup. Although prenatal care is typically focused on maternal nutrition to maximize reproductive success, far less emphasis is placed on essential nutrients for male fertility.

Selenium, zinc, folate, vitamins C and E, and polyunsaturated fatty acids are some of the nutrients believed to be beneficial for sperm health and mobility. Because walnuts are rich in many of these elements, researchers investigated how eating walnuts might affect sperm vitality in a 2012 study. Recruiting 117 healthy men who routinely consume a Western-style diet, half were instructed to include 75 grams of walnuts each day for 12 weeks. Compared to the control group that experienced no changes in sperm quality, the walnut group had improved semen parameters, including increased fatty acid profiles, sex hormones, mobility, and structure.
