Many people worlwide suffer from a sinus infection, and they all tend to reach for antibiotics, which in the end of the day cause more harm than good.

The reason why antibiotics aggravate the issue is because they kill both good and bad bacteria in your nasal passages. The nasal cavity needs the good bacteria to protect it against the buildup bacteria. This means that if there’s no good bacteria left, there is nothing else there to protect the nasal passage.

Dr. Mas Takashima, the director of Sinus Center at Baylor College of Medicine in order to solve this problem decided to develop new therapies and his main purpose is to reduce the symptoms and fight the sinus infection. The surprising thing about his therapy is that it involves baby shampoo sinus irrigation and probiotic nasal rinse.

He explains that his therapies will be able to target the bacteria and it will help people with chronic and acute sinusitis. Even though some patients were surprised with his method, in the end they were very satisfied with the results.

How Do The Therapies Work?

According to Takashima, the baby shampoo irrigation can clean up the nasal cavity with surfactant and it will also break the oily layers which prevent the bad bacteria from being wiped away. He explains that this works in the same way as how the children wash their hand with soap to clean bacteria from their hands.

Every 8 ounces of saline must contain  a half a teaspoon of shampoo in order to get the best results. All you have to do is to prepare a mixture with 1 rounded teaspoon of baking soda with 3 heaping teaspoons of salt and store it in a small Ziplock bag.  After that, just add ½ teaspoon of baby shampoo and 1 teaspoon of the mixture you made before to 8 ounces of lukewarm distilled or boiled water.

In order to draw the solution, you can use either infant nasal bulb or rubber earbud syringe and then flush your nostril gently with it.

In order to prevent reacurrence and replenish the healthy bacteria, add a probiotic rinse. To create a saline solution, you can use the same instruction, with the only difference of adding a probiotic capusule’s content instead of baby shampoo.

After hearing the patients complaning about how they couldn’t manage to shake the sinus even after a multiple course of antibiotic, he realized that something happened that cause a change in patient’s ability to fight sinus infection. Moreover, he claims that probiotic can be really helpful to replenish the good bacteria and it can prevent the reappearance of bad bacteria.

Takashima suggests you to consult your doctor first before trying this irrigation at home since there are many different causes of sinus infection.
